I got a bill from my insurance company for additional premium to change my 2004 Chevrolet Colorado to the 2024 Ford Maverick. This is only for Bodily Injury Liability, Property Damage Liability and Accidental Death. The premium for these coverages increased 53% to insure the Maverick. On the other hand, they lowered the cost for these coverages on my Honda CR-V by 16%. Rates are based on the same coverage, same drivers, same annual mileage, and same address (crazy Florida).

Consider that my Maverick has safety features not available on the 2004 Colorado:
side-curtain airbags
knee airbag
tire pressure monitoring system
pre-collision assist with emergency braking
rear view camera
lane departure warning
lane-keeping aid
lane-centering
hill desent control

Are you guys driving your Mavericks so recklessly that you have super-increased the experience factors for wrecks and claims?
it’s just you and your insurance. No issues like that on my end.

Here's our current policy, as the 24-25 renewal hasn't yet been issued:

Ford Maverick Why the #!!%$ is Liability Insurance so Costly for the Maverick? 1710780938480-fi

Full Annual Premium on the Maverick is $825.00, including the Premier Roadside Assistance & Responsible Driver Plan charge of $23.00 shown on the 2nd page. A little higher than my wife's Crosstrek, but not hugely given its 5 years newer and heavier.

This is with Travelers and in NJ, one of the highest insurance cost states. Fully expect the premium will increase at renewal, as ALL the companies are taking rate increases claiming their costs of repair/replacement are up something like 38%. - I'm a licensed insurance agent for something like 40 years now, and we in a 'hard-market' regardless of what anyone claims.

Because insurance is more of a scam! I have sprinklers in my house that statefarm (statecrap) reduces my premium by $26 per year for the first year I was with them. I looked at a few random years of my coverage and the "sprinkler discount" isn't there anymore. It's gone. For auto the default coverage they'll give you is 100/300 which is way over covered, if you try to reduce that by half, you'd think the premium is reduce by half or around over half......nope only by $8 bucks for 6 months. Even if they pro-rated your coverage because you sold/trade your vehicle the calculation is wrong and always in their benefit.

My son left USAA for Progressive. Saved a bunch of money. USAA is great if you have a problem, but yes steep.
Last year I changed from Progressive to USAA and saved 40%. The longer you are with a company the more they charge. All Insurance companies have newcomer rates that will gradually go up.

Sounds like it is time to fire your current insurance company. Do a little shopping, will take less time than your original post.

Read the original post you quoted. We are supposed to be talking about the cost of LIABILITY insurance. It has nothing to do about the cost of repairing the new Maverick.
Actually, it does. You hit another Maverick or any modern vehicle with a billion sensors, airbags and other required safety equipment, and it's a lot more likely the vehicle you hit will be totaled. So, liability insurance has skyrocketed.

People, quit quoting me in posts about the increasing cost of auto insurance and implying I'm stupid. I know the cost of insurance is skyrocketing, and I know that you should shop around to get the best rate. The point was that my insurance company (The Hartford) wanted more premium for liability only insurance on the Maverick vs the 2004 Colorado by over 50%. State Farm's rate for the Maverick is less than for the Colorado. Therefore, it appears to be an insurance company issue and not that the Maverick for some reason wants to veer into other vehicles and total them, heaven forbid another Maverick. My Colorado was more apt to cause damage to another vehicle or person due to it's lack of the safety features found on the Maverick.

It turns out that this should just be a warning about insurance companies preying on us.

Exactly my experience, that I shared in post #3. Looks like The Hartford is just as bad as Allstate.

The region you drive in is a big reason too. You could be an ace driver but your insurance will go "seattle... eeee... jack thet rate up"

Meanwhile somebody in cornfield iowa theyll just go "nothing to hit there but deer anyway."

Just last week I switched my auto insurance from Allstate to State Farm, and saved almost 60%. This after 50 years with Allstate. Shop around.

Just hope you never have to make a claim with State Farm...

14 years ago I got a company vehicle and sold my personal vehicle. I have not had personal auto insurance that whole time. In the state of NY if you have a lapse in coverage you are treated as a new driver. My Mav insurance quote was similar to what I paid as a teenager. I'm 50 now and have a spotless driving record and no accidents in 15+ years......Mav policy quote is awful.

My daughter's new USAA policy on a 2024 Hybrid XL is ~$180/month and that was with some bundled discounts. Progressive is quoting her ~$120/month. She's going to switch.

I was with the same company for 15 years and switched to AAA and my rates went down by almost half, my Maverick hybrid is the same price as my 2014 Chrysler minivan on everything except the replacement costs. I have 200/500 and you didn't mention uninsured or under insured but I would definitely not go without that coverage especially for a $20 a year full coverage for the cars and my house was $1503. for the year. You old agent can't help you with your rates, the rates are the rates, they file with the insurance department, they can file a discount for bundling or multiple vehicles or whatever but there is no such thing as a sale on insurance.

Get a broker and have them find out how long you need coverage to not be considered a new driver then switch companies. you don't have to wait for the term to expire you will get a refund for you unused portion on your cancelled policy

I would shop around if I were you. Here in New Jersey my 2021 Volvo XC40 is more than my 2023 Ford Maverick Lariat and not by much either. Doesn’t hurt to shop around. 👍
