I've always assumed it was just for style, but I guess now I'm a little curious if there is a real purpose.

It's just a design detail to break it up and not make it look so cheap. I'm going to also assume that it also adds some rigidity to the part.

The top inner most corner of that part is what the ti-fold cover rests against to avoid touching the paint. The fake louvers in that part - - - maybe just a design element to break up the surface to the eye. Perhaps aerodynamic purposes? Maybe it's the door handle to the tardis.

No it doesn’t. Do you even have a tri fold? It rests on the glass, it’s not even wide enough to touch this piece
