That's to cover the "Pillar C" - the rear pillar for the roof. That's where the seat belts are secured to and also needed room for the 4" (?) rear speakers. Hence the reason for the width of the cover and shorter rear window:

I am more worried about the fender cover, where it meets the tailgate:

There's a gap, where the water will get inside into the fender...
That's a gap alright.

What cover do you have?
Undercover Armor.
The best money can buy.
You can sit on it / pile stuff on it.
Locks down tight. Most secure on the market (though a crow bar will open anything).
Can drive with it partially or 96% open.
Can remove the whole thing in minutes if you need to. Very heavy duty. Texture matches, or actually is bed liner material.
Lays flush. I like the look too.
Stays 98% dry inside.
Drips only at the the 4 corners, in a powerful carwash. Virtually dry in average rain.

I've found nothing better.
About $900. Look for Black Friday sales.

Perhaps to open up the rear view ever so slightly as to make it seem a little more open inside. That or just to continue the hashmark styling.

As others have said, it is just a design element. And I think it looks nice, it breaks up that transitional area. The eyes naturally follow lines.

We used to say, it's lipstick on a pig. Now, the maverick is no pig, but a little intentional design esthetic is a nice touch, and unexpected.

It's likely decorative. But at the same time looks intentional / functional.

Like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know. 🤷🏻‍♂️
