Man, when did oil changes become so insane?
Moneyball ruined everything 😭

It's like staring at the mpg gauge while driving hoping for that .1% more so people go 20mph under in one area then 20mph over in the next because momentum... Gotta get those MPGs.

I’ve poked around a bit on this already and decided to do the first oil change as soon as possible after break-in. I live 3 hours from the closest dealer, so I’m at ~2,500 miles. I’m at a conference so I scheduled the service while I’m in civilization. Once they got the truck, they told me the truck comes with Zinc in the oil that is supposed to be important to protecting and breaking in the motor and that I should wait until at least 5,000 miles. I haven’t seen this anywhere on the forums.

Anyone know if this is BS or accurate?

Trying to decide if I need to call back and ask them to do the oil change or wait until 5k.

Thanks!
I contacted my dealer at about 4800 miles asking when to have the first oil change. They said 3,000 miles. I was late but got it done.

Before there were synthetics and semi-synthetics, the rule of thumb was 3K. Synthetics lasted longer than non-synthetic. Older engines often held only 4 quarts. Engines now often hold 5-9 quarts which extends oil life. Short trips wear out the oil faster than highway miles. There is no single right answer. Too many variables to give a simple answer.

The zinc in oil now is enough. The Ecoboost does not have a flat tapped cam in it which requires zinc at every oil change.

The dealer you chose are idiots on modern stuff.

I have a 2022 hybrid XLT LUX First annual oil change done by dealer at 965 miles on 9/30/2023. I am going to my dealer this coming week for the Second Annual oil change with 2,600.1 miles plus about 15 more miles to get it there. I did receive an email from dealer reminding me of upcoming needed oil change that is recommended at least ANNUALLY irregardless of mileage driven and the email stated the milage of 2,348 that was on my truck on the day it was sent.

I have a 2024 Maverick Hybrid. The dealer sticker where I purchased it says to change it at 5000 Miles or 15% Oil life. Right now at 6600 Miles oil life is only at 50%. I will change it sometime now and 10k miles. A non hybrid may require the oil change be done sooner
The dealer with 5k recommendation MAY be using synthetic blend and will install full synthetic for a few dollars more (might put larger milage on windshield sticker if using full synthetic).

I'm sitting at a Ford dealership right now getting my first oil change on my 24 XLT HYBRID. the app told me it still had 32% on oil life and it has 9332 miles on the truck. When I bought it they told me 10k for first oil change. I'm under the school of better somewhat early.

Actually, probably a little late for the initial oil/filter change. But now, you can just follow the OLM. It will tell you when you should change the oil/filter. Synthetic 0w20, never a blend, for the Hybrid.

The manual says that, for the Hybrid, if you're not going by the OLM, change it once a year or every 10k, to be safe. The OLM takes into consideration how many miles the gasoline engine has been used. That number may not even be half of the total miles on your truck.

What's better for the engine? some zinc additive or oil without the sparkles from engine break-in?
I'm of the opinion that getting rid of the normal metal wear in the oil early is more beneficial.

I first changed my own oil & filter on my hybrid at 2,500 miles because I wanted to see if everything was alright. Used Mobil 1 0W-20 hybrid specific 20K oil & Ford filter. Better safe than sorry. I’m 80 & continue to change my oil & anything else that needs doing that’s not covered by recall. I keep a maintenance book with receipts.

The break in period for the 2.0 EB is 1,000 miles per the Owner's Manual. 5,000 is a lot.
I couldn't tell you whether an additive was put in the oil at the manufacturer but Ford states that they don't use break-in oil.
You are 100 percent correct first oil change on the ford 2.0 ecobost is at 1,000 miles then I recommend every 5,000 miles after that and I start at 5,000 for 2nd oil change easy to remember doing it

Not sure I'd jump to that conclusion. If the dealer is short staffed (and who isn't) they may defer oil changes to have the technicians spend time on higher margin repairs.

I have my first oil change and recall work scheduled for next week. At 1800 miles oil life is 60%. Likely could push it to 3-4K, but rather pay for maintenance now than a bigger repair bill in 5 years.
Your oil monitor only shows 60% left at 1,800 miles ? WOW something is wrong there.

That's awesome that you're 80 and still DIY'ing oil changes!

Also, you could change that Mobil oil at 20k miles and the engine should still outlive you ;)

Maybe, hard to say. I've done about 40 trips less than a mile helping a neighbor move a pile of mulch and a bunch other things. About 75% of the time I'm hauling stuff with a lot of maneuvering into tight spaces. The timer shows 60 hours. Comparable straight highway miles would probably be closer to 3K. It drives just fine, no strange noises. So if there is something wrong, there is no indication.
