Yeah, that kind of explains it.

Hi, I installed my tailgate assist with the damper in the upper side and the arm to the bottom, I noticed you installed it the other way, maybe that's why you were having the issue, Mine is working fine after 2 months of use.

Yeah, that kind of explains it.
Your better off with the chrome end of the piston down that way it won't collect dirt and drag it into the seal prolonging its life. It will wipe the dirt off and gravity will take care of the rest.

Everyone who has stated so is correct, the barrel of the assist goes up and the rod down. There is a mechanical reasoning behind this configuration. On the inside of these gas assist shocks there is in addition to the gas, a liquid lubricant. The reasoning for the positioning is so that the lubricant can keep the rod end seal from drying out and leaking.

Excellent explanation-totally agree with you. Though I don't get why there are pics of these closers out there showing them with the rod up on other makes and models.

Does anyone have any other places or uses where they put the bottle opener that had to be removed?

Also want to mention, what a pain getting that lower ball mount installed, they could have made that much easier. I thought I had to be doing something wrong until I looked it up and saw it is just poorly done and overly glued locking bolt.

The 20% off is only good for one time. I forgot to order the dampener, and tried to use the 20% off coupon code again and it was rejected.

I discovered that to avoid the rubbing you have to be sure that the metal plate that the rod attaches to is exactly straight up and down. Your picture shows that the bottom of the plate is jutting out slightly towards the tailgate. Mine was at first and I experienced the rubbing. Once I reposition the plate correctly my problem was gone.

Also as you see in the picture the correct end of the soft close shock has the fat end up

Seriously, there is never a reason to order from the ford main site that I can think of. The dealer sites like this literally have everything off 18-20%.
If it's something large/heavy then the free pickup option may be worthwhile vs shipping costs.
