Yeah I think it's because many new vehicles no longer come with a spare tire, so people are surprised when they do get one now. Having never used a spare tire in 20+ years of driving, I've thought about taking them off a few times, but for my longer trips into the mountains it's nice to know it's there.
As stated earlier about 30% of new cars today don't come with a spare tire of any kind. Not too wild to assume a small budget truck might also not have one as well.
Having just experienced a flat in the middle of no where in a vehicle that had a compressor w/ fix a flat in lieu of a spare I have a newfound appreciation for a spare tire. Long story short what should have been a 15 min inconvenience turned into a 4+ hour (Just for the tow truck) ordeal for a flat tire. Not to mention the most expensive flat tire of my life. I personally will never own a vehicle with out a spare. Kinda like a fire extinguisher, when you need it - you need it
To reinforce brielee's post, to save space, back in the early 1970's, manufacturers went to the inflatable "donut" tire. (My 1970 Barracuda convertible was the only car I ever had with one.) But then, the fix-a-flat cans started EXPLODING in the trunks of cars. So, I don't know how long they continued with that - they might still do it. If you ordered a Maverick, you did indeed order a temporary ("donut") spare, barring any options that upgrade that to the "full-size" (dissimilar) spare...
