I am still trying to swap my not full size spare for something closer to the 245s that are on the truck now- Also note those with a factory hitch lose a little bit of clearance to mount a larger spare-

I have seen 225s fit with hitch and not messing with the sharks teeth- Would like a 235 at least, to try and mock up the fit and see what happens.

I wonder if you could modify the teeth for the small amount of clearance that a 235/65 requires over a 225/65. Maybe reprofile the tips of the center teeth for the added clearance, then spray paint for corrosion resistance...

Since the spare tire is part of the rear end protection system, I think I will forego adding a larger more expensive wheel/tire combination which would be destroyed in a rear end collision anyway!

235 fits for me as a spare.

I was concerned about using one of my steelie rims with the stock size (225/65r17) fitting in the spare tire location. I bought aftermarket rims on my truck and wanted to use one of the take offs as as a full size tire to replace the tiny compact spare. It does fit my 2023 just fine. No modifications needed. It is a little snug but all the safety features are still intact.

That is pretty snug- The steelie should be wide enough for a 225/235 ?- kinda hoping a somewhat worm 245 could fit but without cutting into the sharks teeth- Not sure how much of an issue a 225 spare would cause if the running 3 tires are 245's - We do tow a trailer so not wanting to cause further issues if we need to break out the spare.

RE: purpose of teeth = they are part of the rear end collision system to deflate the spare in a controlled way to absorb the impact rather than transmit it forward. I wouldn't mess with it. Saving your spare tire will be the least of your problems in a heavy rear ender. Your truck will be totalled anyway.
This would be one of the instances where I prefer the F-150 method - use the crush zone of the SOB that rear-ended your vehicle instead of your own. Of course, anything hit hard enough will be damaged, and the full framed trucks are no exception.

Regarding spare location, if I were building for a dedicated off-road vehicle, I'd mount the spare in the bed and secure it there, because if you stuck out in the wild, there's a good chance that you wouldn't be able to get under the vehicle to get to the spare anyway. But for ordinary street use, the location is fine. Though I still would prefer that it be the exact same tire and size as the other 4. Otherwise, if you're on a long trip with 500-600 miles per day of travel, your entire vacation schedule could be thrown out of whack because of the delay of having to get another tire to replace the damaged one - whereas with an actual duplicate spare, you swap it out in 15 minutes and worry about repair on your own schedule.

Technically, the spare isn’t “a part” of the protection - the teeth are specifically there to try and take it out of the equation altogether. In theory having no spare there at all would be safer.

I’m not advocating for anyone to modify or not modify the deflator teeth - but IMHO if you are hit hard enough from behind to pop that spare tire, you are probably going to be in the market for a new vehicle regardless of how fancy your rims are. 🙂

The XLs run 225s so if it is a stock steelie that will fit fine.

Is the stock steelie that comes as a *Full" size spare the same as what comes as the running gear on the XL ?

"Probably." I can't confirm for sure what the full size spare rim is because I wasn't lucky enough to receive one - but I suspect that it is a 17x7 just like the OE XL wheels.

That's exactly right. The teeth are there to protect occupants, not the truck itself. If it takes a hit hard enough to employ the teeth to deflate the tire, you can expect that the truck is a goner.

Maybe trucks built and destined for Canada are different who knows. My Camaro Z-28 and Dodge Dakota have different options etc than those available in the good ol’ USA.
2023 models for Canada all came with block heaters.

If folks ever go somewhere where there's pizza but no pizza cutter...there it is. Right under their truck.

Two breaking bad references in one day here, I'm on a roll.
