Lurching/surging feel when it's near or below freezing, until the engine reaches operating temperature. Never any grinding noise.

Ford knows about the surging issue when the engine is cold, there was a software update for it in 2023. It did not fix the issue, since it's still happening.

For the people who voted that they never experienced this do you live in a place where it doesn't get below 40?
I live in Texas. In the winter we usually get only a few days where the high is below 40. We do get a good number of days where it's below 40 in the morning but warms up to the 40s or 50s in the afternoon.

First couple thousand miles I was experiencing the surging (like being hit with heavy wind stopped in drive) once nearly every trip when it was below 40F or so, but it's become a lot less frequent the past month, I think. After reading here it seemed normal, and I figured it was something with a break in period, computer learning, or the hybrid system just being a little less refined than Toyota's.

@mav47 - any other problems with the clutch plate since couple years ago?

(I used Google search to find that threads - MTC search not so good many times)
@HeyBales

No problems on that clutch after the initial slippage events and that handful P0811 codes.

So, as I theorized at the time: a few slippage events bedded in the friction surfaces, which increased the friction coefficient and thus raised the slippage torque on the clutch assembly to a level above max. engine output torque.

It hasn't slipped since, so the problem indeed fixed itself 👍

Those are the best problems to have!

So then then its possible this is a problem that solves itself after break in?

It’s only 28 this morning and I drove the entire way to work with HVAC and radio off and listened and felt for anything similar to this and I’ve got nothing.

Could hear the slightest mechanical “transition” which is likely the point where traditional brakes are engaging and the pass off occurs.

But I felt nothing in my pedal and zero lurching at all.

Need to add a category.

Rarely mine will lurch when cold.
But never had anything I would call grinding.

Probably what most people mean is the sound of the brake pads. Not the transmission or engine. That's a common sound in every car if you let it "creep" just an inch with foot on the brake.
That's interesting that you get a lurch without the noise. The noise is definitely different than the creeping brake pad noise. It's a grinding/groaning coming from engine area that occurs in tandem with lurches. Mine does not lurch unless it's also making the noise. It almost feels like a bad clutch that's intermittently catching.

Thanks for posting these - haven't seen them yet and have lots of good info. I don't think I've experienced any of the slipping and haven't had any CEL's yet. I'm also a somewhat spirited driver in Orlando and hit WOT a couple times a week. To be sure, I did a few long WOT runs to see if I could get things to seat/bed but still have the same issues when stopped. Planning to tow a 1500 lb trailer 1000 miles in a few weeks through some mountains so that'll really break things in and hopefully solve my problems.

I've got just under 800 miles on my 2025. It does it most of the time shortly after startup and coming to a stop. It kinda buzzes, and occasionally I can stop it if I hit the brakes a little harder. It's very noticable when it's below freezing.
Typically though it won't do it once warmed up
I was thinking/hoping this would be a thing only with MY 22-24's and would not occur with the newer eCVT. Maybe, it really is something in the design that could be programmed out by the software.

Maybe it's less of a "grinding" noise and more of a "low rumble" or "deep rattle". I've attached a video of mine. It's hard to tell in the video, but with each rumble noise, the truck would inch forward.

Here's another thread with a video from @e01569 : 2024 Hybrid strange groaning noise from engine compartment | MaverickTruckClub - 2022+ Ford Maverick Pickup Forum, News, Owners, Discussions

Whoa. Absolutely nothing like that for me in the 2025.

However the 2025 is the HF55 and the 2022-2024 is the HF45 so I'm curious if that has something at play.

I can feel a ground in my brake pedal and stopped at a light it stop sign. It's been wicked cold here in Ohio and I don't know if that's contributing to my grinding. I've taken it to the dealer 4 times and they can't replicate it they say. I did notice last night when stopped and the engine shut off and flipped over to the hybrid battery power that the grinding stopped. When the engine kicked back in, the grinding was back. Going to try to go back in this week to see if I can get some resolution. Getting frustrated at this point that the shop can't seem to figure anything out.

This is the first time I’ve jumped on this thread and was not aware of the issues people are talking about.
it’s been well below zero a lot lately here and I have not had any of the issues you guys are experiencing With my 25 hybrid. But I will keep an ear out for it now. I still have less than a 1000 miles on the truck.

Take one of them on a drive. Drive until the sound appears and say "That is what I'm talking about." Get them to admit to hearing it too.

Some dealerships have a policy of that they can't put miles on a customer's vehicle. One told me he can't go further than one trip around the block. But you sure can put miles on your own vehicle. So take 'em for a ride.
