I am aware of the TSB. Problem is the transfer shaft actually eats into the case and whole trans must be replaced. Have looked into used trans and found on with 45k on it for $1900 and cost to replace is about $1400-1600. Car still is only going to be worth about $6000 so still not feasible. Even in this state (totally drivable but with whine) car is worth about $3000 trade in.
No I get that, but while it's still in "Just" a whine state, there's more likely than not no internal case damage yet. There's a very distinctive change in sound between when the bearing is failing and the case gets damaged. If it's still a whine, not a scraping sound, it should be fine.

Also have to pay attention to if the noise is whenever the gas engine is running, changing w engine RPM, or if it's speed dependent. The transfer shaft bearings only make noise with the gas engine running. If the noise is speed dependent (and definitely not a wheel bearing), it would actually be the final drive carrier bearings, which would require a unit anyway.

That said, It's still a $3,500 job at best, if you can find someone to do it, but better than scraping the car.

It's a lil shady, but try trading it in to CarMax, see what they'll give you.
