A nice little crowbar and those plastic things are toast. Around here a lot of people don't even try the caps, they just drill a hole in the tank!
Kind of what I was thinking... If someone is going to commit a felony (and I think gas costs enough these days that it probably meets the felony threshold), something like a locking cap isn't going to deter them. They can cut a fuel line or punch a hole in the tank as easy as prying the lock off. Frankly, I'd rather have them steal the gas than do multiple hundreds of dollars worth of damage by prying the gas cover off, or prying off the lock...

A couple of years ago, during the height of the pandemic, some idiot punched holes in the bottom of a bunch of airplane wings to steal the AvGos from them. They did over a million dollars worth of damage (adds up in a hurry) when all they needed to do was to drain the fuel out through the existing, non-lockable sump drains built into EVERY airplane.

And they can't even use the AvGas in their automobiles, mowers, or whatever because of the (comparatively) high lead content that will foul their spark plugs in a heartbeat!

I'm not worried about the fuel...just the possibility of having something put into the tank. I am really not worried it is just all my previous vehicles have had a remote door release. It all the stories we hear makes us expect the worst out of society. Its that 2% that ruins it for the rest.

WHY would Ford not have a locking gas cap on Maverick? It should be offered standard....or very least as an option. I would pay more the have a locking one.
If they want your gas they are going to drill a hole on the tank if it is locked. I hate that people are willing to destroy others property for $20 of gas

Don't even look at the gas lid wrong. It'll pop out on ya.

My '22 Escape SE hybrid AWD had a button release in the cab, so I was shocked to learn the same year "luxury top of the line" (I know that offends some people here referring to a fully loaded $40k model with luxury in the package name as the model with the most features) Maverick with a majority the same design didn't and I've accidentally opened it more times that I can count already. I always use that area to throw tools on the tonneau cover and such... Leaning on the side panel sometimes.

I'm not worried about the capless design, just the crappy latch. No way that thing is going to hold up for very long.

What's your trim option (XL, XLT, Lariat)? I think the Lariat has a locking gas door, don't know about the others. Maybe you could order parts to install a locking gas door on a trim package that does not have one.
I have a 23 Lariat Lux and it does not have a locking gas door

Probably because it doesn't have a gas cap. The fuel door locks on the hybrids though.

How many times have you had your gas siphoned, or sand poured into your tank ?
I've lived in Chicago for 25 years, and 3 miles from Chicago for the last 18 years and never once had fuel stolen. If fuel theft is an issue, you may want to reconsider where you live. Last I heard of this problem was in the late 70's.

It’s hard to steal the gas without the thingy you put in the thingy. You know, the thingy they give you that’s stored in the thingy. How many gas thief’s carry a thingy with them?
Only the smart ones.

Has anybody found a good non-oem locking plug that fits 2022 EB Maverik? Amazon or something? I read that Ford itself only charges 25 bucks? True (surprising if so). Want to make sure the seal is still there to prevent a code from being thrown (ECM, evap systems).

I had a Geo Tracker years ago that had locks that would freeze up every time I washed it, in the winter. The only way for the fuel door to open was with a key. I stood out in the fuel island with my lock deicer, freezing to death, fighting with that @%&%$ fuel door trying to get it to open way to many times.

I am very much a fan of all the keyless stuff out there now.

That is something you never now until its too late! Do you think that no one ever screws with someone's unlocked tank nowadays? I'm not sure but I'd rather be safe than sorry. If the fuel door is always locked when the car is locked as someone question, then that would be OK. But if not, I'm not comfortable with that.
Will try to remember to ask Tim Bartz.
My GF just had her gas cap stolen on her VW Atlas. Guy just pried the door open with a screw driver and stole the cap. So even a locked gas door won't stop them

Good luck sticking a siphon hose down the capless filler and actually expecting to get fuel. There is a reason why you have to use that plastic funnel thing in your jack wrapper to even get fuel in with a gas can. No lock is required.
