Let's look at part numbers and prices of the part.

The Ecoboost Fuel Tank, Part# NZ6Z-9002-A, costs $356.37.

The Hybrid Fuel Tank, Part# NZ6Z-9002-B, $935.41.

I think this settles it that the two fuel tanks are different.
Holy cow. All the gas tanks I have ever bought were empty of anything inside. Meaning why the heck is the hybrid tank so much more? Thicker metal because its pressurized?

Knew a guy back in the 90s who would “burp” his tank when filling up, he’d fill until the click then bounce up and down on the rear bumper, then fill another half gallon or so.

Otherwise you have all the bed space, maybe try a auxiliary tank setup like this:

Yes the hybrid is pressurized and instructions say to not top off to prevent possible hazards (does not say if hazard is to person or vehicle). A button is pushed to depressurize the tank and unlatch the fuel door and if that doesn't open doors then there is a manual cable to pull to Do it.
On a Prius, topping up can cause gas to get between the bladder and the tank or into the vapor collection system. When that happens the inside of the car smells of gas fumes.

That sounds like a design flaw.
I think they discontinued that style.
But made a million like that first I'm sure.

i believe that what you are referring to is the fuel capacity of each tank, not their actual physical dimensions. the discrepancy is due to the additional inside the tank pieces/parts needed for the pressurized fuel system that hybrids are equipped with. so, same size tanks, different fuel capacities. hope that makes sense.

2.7 gallons worth of additional parts?

It's all hypothesis anyway.

All I know is you can burn 16 gallons with a hybrid if you are brave enough to drive past the software estimated zero mark.

It's not really a problem for me but, if my '23 Hybrid had a bigger tank (not sure how much bigger) I could only make 1 fuel stop on my frequent St Pete to Indy trips.

I filled my tank two weeks ago. I'm at 3/4 of a tank. Not overly concerned about the extra 2.7 gallons, personally.
