Im so old i remember when the gas tank just had a gas cap and a door that opened to get to it😳
Not really that long ago, A lot of members have shown their beautiful older cars that have caps and doors that close!

Interesting.. I didn't know that. Rats... now I have something else to research and learn... Why the fuel delivery of the hybrid requires pressurized fuel storage, and conversely why it was decided the Ecoboost wouldn't benefit from the same work (or to the extent that it wasnt' worth the extra spend).
Pressurized? I think it’s a load BS to say that the EB is not pressurized. All Gasoline automotive fuel tanks are pressurized.
At least since emission controls were instituted they have been.

If you pull it what would happen? Maybe something bad, maybe something good. You'll never find out unless you pull it.

Will I find it in the index if I look for "green plastic thingy"?

The manual for my 2022 XL Hybrid says in an emergency I'm supposed to use a plastic tool stored with the jack to pry the fuel door open (p.178). It doesn't mention the thingy.

I just went to the garage and saw the thingy, which I've never noticed in three years. I pulled it and nothing happened, even after I turned the key in the ignition. Am I supposed to pull harder? I'm afraid I'll break a half axle if I pull too hard.
ETA: post sitting with circles going when computer shut off, fired off the next morning - now a duplicate. Leaving since info in one post.

There is a correct direction so you don't snap it of course. This probably doesn't apply if your manual says pry the door open.

MANUALLY OPENING THE FUEL FILLER DOOR - HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (HEV)

Note: The transmission must be in park (P) or neutral (N).
When using the manual override cable do the following:
  1. Switch the ignition on.
Ford Maverick New guy here...whats this thingy? {filename}

Note: The manual override cable is in the left side rear wheel well area.
  1. Pull the manual override cable down.
Note: Pull the manual override cable once. Repeated pulls can damage the manual override cable.
Note: Make sure the manual override cable moves freely without any obstructions.
  1. Switch the ignition off.
  2. Complete the refueling process within 20 minutes.
  3. Return the manual override cable to its original position.
Note: Only follow this procedure if the fuel filler door fails to open. If the problem remains, have your vehicle checked as soon as possible.

> Newer MY manual shows this now, yours must be different shape for prying ability.
This one is merely for filling.

ADDING FUEL FROM A PORTABLE FUEL CONTAINER

When refueling the vehicle fuel tank from a fuel container, use the fuel filler funnel included with your vehicle. See Locating the Fuel Filler Funnel.
Note: Do not use aftermarket funnels as they may not work with the capless fuel system and can damage it.
When refueling the vehicle fuel tank from a fuel container, do the following:
  1. Fully open the fuel filler door.

Or perhaps it’s the Arming Mechanism for the Jelly Fish Launcher.

Welcome to Maverick Truck Club, my friend.

The wife’s Toyota has a bunch of blank button things, so we got a set of stickers from Amazon that say things like “EJECTION SEAT” and “OIL SLICK”, etc.

Something like these:

Pressurized after stopping the likely difference. Probably amount of pressure too.

For EB - I'm sure there is a method to keep the flow blocked, perhaps leave it running, and try to add fuel. But it seems at least on stopping, the pipe is open and fuel away.
Or is there a sensor on the fuel filler door, and on push open you hear a relay click?

For hybrid - the fuel inlet is opened when you push the button or do the manual green thingy - for 20 min. Don't do that and you are going to have fuel dumping out, at least a bit perhaps before the auto-shutoff kicks off.
Perhaps eventually, after listening to the relay clicks after turn off after a long while, the pipe might be open - but betting not since you have to fuel within 20 min, so it seems to seal it back up.

It was an interesting decision on Ford's part to include a locking gas cover on the Hybrid, but not on the EcoBoost. Maybe it just simply came down to buyers of the Hybrid demanding "No one is stealing my gas", so as to alter their mpg results?
No, it has to do with the pressurized tank in the hybrids.

My 25 AWD Hybrid doesn't have a gas cap.

I remember no door, just a cap.
I also remember opening the tail light or pulling the license plate down.
I remember when there was no door or any flap to hide the filler, the filler was directly attached to the gas tank and the gas tank was mounted inside of the cab, directly behind the seat. What could have possibly went wrong?

Edit: out of curiosity I searched to find out when this practice ended. Ford, Chevy and Dodge used gas tanks inside of the cab up until the 1972 model year.

At least since emission controls were instituted they have been.
Pressure is relative. In the EB, the pressure is vented into an evaporative canister, which condenses the volatile hydrocarbon fumes and sends it back to the gas tank as liquid gasoline. That system is still venting the pressurized air from the gas tank, and that air still contains small amounts of hydrocarbons, even though the majority has been condensed out.

On the flip side, manufacturers that make hybrids want to get all of the legal and tax benefits of making vehicles with the partial zero emissions designation. To get that status, your vehicle has to operate part of the time without the gasoline engine running and have ZERO evaporative emissions. The way to achieve that is by having a sealed gas tank that never vents to the atmosphere, except when refilling.

In the Prius, they use a rubber bladder inside of the gas tank, like a big water balloon, that has no air gap in the bladder, which means no evaporative losses.

In the Maverick, they skipped the expensive rubber bladder and went with a still expensive reinforced gas tank and filler mechanism that doesn’t leak fumes and won’t deform or rupture under pressure. The reinforced gas tank is still more expensive than the EB tank and it’s not needed to meet the less stringent base-line “low emission vehicle” standards that the EB has to meet.

I'm not going to use all the little things and then, 10 years later when me and the Mav are old, I'll be running across these little helpers and I'll need them and I'll have NO idea what in the he'll they're for. I hope you guys will still be around.
