Maverick windshield replacing really appears to be a problem and a safety issue.... this should be reported to the national vehicle safety director and then be covered by our Ford motor company as a recall issue..

What's the issue? Not being smart, I just haven't heard about it.

Report it to NHTSA if you think there's a problem. While they're cheap and pit easily, I highly doubt you'll get anywhere.

What evidence do you have that this happens more to Mavericks than almost any other newer vehicle?? I think this is a little like the fellow with both legs amputated because he got run over by a beer truck when passed out in the middle of the highway. He sued the beer company, and the Judge told him he didn't have a leg to stand on!!!!!😜

Go ahead and file a complaint, but there are no Federal standards regarding rock "resistance", only rollover strength and the ability to keep your noggin from punching a hole thru it.

Keep in mind, Maverick for 2022 was a clean-sheet design, that windshield did not exist before in some other vehicle. You can't compare it to an older, thicker windshield used on a platform for many years. Ford and its' vendors were able to create a windshield design that met the applicable Federal standards, the fact that it may crack or chip easily is a result of designing to the standards that exist.

FWIW, the PGW replacement windshield on my 2024 Lariat is a lot tougher than the OEM one. While it has chips, none have resulted in cracks.

Carry the appropriate insurance coverage, and move on.

In my 40+ years of driving I've had my share of windshield drama. The Maverick's doesn't seem out of line in performance. I have a 22 and commuted for 2 years through a construction zone. Lots of hits with no real damage. Tomorrow I could be singing a different tune, I'm well aware.

Back in the 80s I installed a roof rack on a Dodge Colt. I wanted it really snug. I ended up cracking my windshield by flexing the roof. Expensive lesson.

What is the PGW windshield? Have you noticed any difference in sound compared to the acoustic glass the lariat came with? I've got a cracked windshield now that Ive been waiting to replace due to the expense. $500 insurance deductible vs $1000 out of pocket is what I was quoted.

PGW is Pittsburgh Glass & Window, although according to the DOT code mine was made in China. It is supposedly the same acoustic glass as the OEM Lariat one.

My crack was not a manufacturing defect. I'm don't recall seeing many posts about cracked windshields.

The cast off from the chip-seal process (Read: Those orange signs warning "Fresh Oil") was the bane of our windshields' (yes, plural possessive; we went through many)existence when we lived in Montana.

understand the frustration of a cracked windshield but geez there's no telling how many get cracked every day on any vehicle brand, model, year, etc you can think of and the reasons are numerous. There's a multitude replacement shops are out there knowing their gonna make a decent living replacing them. :poop: happens. File a claim with your insurance or pay out of pocket it that's the case and move on.

My 23 last summer got hit on thruway going 60 mph. HARD it was so loud it scared me. Yet it did NOT crack. Nor has it yet. I thought for sure it hit so hard it would be cracked right off. NOPE. No idea what it was. BUT wow it was LOUD. Maybe got bullet proof one. lol.

Yep, that brings back memories. Many years ago I had a very similar experience. Out of curiosity i did a google search and was a little surprised on the result i got (cut/pasted below) 🤷‍♂️

AI Overview
Small objects, like rocks, crack windshields more easily than large, heavy objects because of pressure concentration (P=F/A). A tiny stone concentrates high-velocity force into a minute area, exceeding the glass's localized strength, whereas a large, blunt object spreads its force over a wider surface area.
  • Pressure over Force: The key factor is 20,000 to 24,000 psi of pressure, which is roughly 60 pounds of force, needed to crack a windshield. A small, fast-moving object concentrates this force to create a fracture, often causing a "bulls-eye" or "star break".
  • Mass vs. Velocity: Small pebbles, often from construction zones, have high velocity and small mass, concentrating energy at a sharp point. A large object might hit with higher overall force, but if the impact area is broad, the force is distributed, reducing the chance of breaking the laminated glass.
  • Weak Points: Tiny chips from small debris act as, which can grow into large cracks due to heat or vibration, according to this Reddit post.
  • Laminated Structure: Windshields are made of laminated safety glass, designed to dent or absorb impact from larger, blunt objects rather than shattering immediately, as described in this Anthony Volk Glass article
