It’s hard to believe that a couple accidental nozzle clicks causes that part to fail.

Must be my OCD kicking in....Seriously though what is the point? I use a credit card with a low limit especially obtained for gas use and fast food drive through use. Pay the bill each month and get rewards. I never have seen the need to round up my gas purchase. My late brother would do that everytime. He was MUCH older than I and when gas was 55 cents a gallon I watched as the pump clicked off at about 10 cents so he wanted to go to the next dollar amount and ended up with gas all over his shoes and pants. I guess that stuck in my head. Now many times in the past before pay at the pump I would NOT fill up but put in $5 and go in to pay so I didn't need change.
...it is something I have always done and I do not have any issue with CEL or evap errors.IndyChill posted in #55 he experienced CEL & extremely slow fuel fill, after only topping off a click or so. I haven't investigated the Mav Evap system layout vs my old F-150. The problem won't go away on the F-150, but on Mav maybe it will, maybe requires new parts? The shame of it all IMO is any design layout that subjects Evap system to this problem needs a redesign. Old cars you could fill until gas overfill soaked your pants & shoes. Simply an Oh shucks moment.Must be my OCD kicking in...it is something I have always done and I do not have any issue with CEL or evap errors.
Ford only covers emissions components under the standard 3 year/36k warranty unless they are explicitly listed under the emissions warranty. I'd bet good money the canister is not listed. That CEL was unrelated to over filling, The stealership just informed me the hose plastic fitting broke off the canister. Their replacing the canister, not under warranty? what happened to the emissions warranty that was for a long time a while back?
Then AI search gave me this:
and this:
- "Topping off" fuel: A common cause of EVAP system damage is overfilling the gas tank past the first click of the pump nozzle. This can force liquid fuel into the charcoal canister, which is designed only to handle vapor. This degrades the canister and can cause it to fail prematurely.
It may be related to the unsupported line on the canister stressing the plastic fitting. I can't really see a plastic canister designed to be connected to the fuel tank be affected badly by gasoline? Maybe the weight of the hose with gas in it caused the fitting to break off?
- Weak plastic fittings: The quick-connect plastic nipples on the canister and related fuel lines are prone to cracking or breaking under strain. Over time, the tension from the connected hoses combined with vehicle movement can stress the plastic, leading to failure.
And that is exactly why the EVAP system is in place to protect the environment from hazardous spills. I personally don't miss have gas run down the side of the car and soak my shoes or pants. But hey if I top off I can go another 0.1 mile before I need to fill up againIndyChill posted in #55 he experienced CEL & extremely slow fuel fill, after only topping off a click or so. Agree, Evap systems are important especially today, with many more vehicles. Smelling gas fumes today from vintage carburetor cars, brings back memories when they all smelled like that. And that is exactly why the EVAP system is in place to protect the environment from hazardous spills. Most likely a problem with one of the evap system valves. The fuel door doesn't open until the tank pressure is zero. The valve is likely sticking causing the pressure not to drop in a timely manner. That's why your fuel door wouldn't openLast week I was going from Indy to St.Pete and stopped for my last fuel stop. The fuel door refused to open and a message came up on the dash saying it wasn't opening. It finally did so I started fueling. The nozzle shut off in the first 30 sec. and continued to do that several times. I tried to slow feed it but it still would back up and shut off. I squezzed enough fuel in to get home. The other day I noticed my CEL was on. Who knows when that happened. I haven't tried to refuel yet, but tomorrow I will go to ORiellys and get the code. In three years and 67K miles I have clicked the nozzle 2 or 3 times.
It was a nice smell - but not heathy unfortunately.Agree, Evap systems are important especially today, with many more vehicles. Smelling gas fumes today from vintage carburetor cars, brings back memories when they all smelled like that.
Smart move. No MPG gained by squeezing every ounce of fuel in tank. Only expensive emission system repairs might be result. I paid once dearly for that mistake, not again. 1st shutoff click I'm done.My mav reeks of gas for a day or two everytime it has been topped off after the pump auto stops, so I stopped topping off altogether.
