Big Shudder

I've put almost 4000 mi on my Hybrid 2.5L XL Hybrid and simply love this truck! However about 4 times when you first take off the motor will be revving high, sort of like when the choke would be on but then after a minute or 2 it slows down, usually normally but a few times it makes a big shudder, shakes the whole truck before the engine slows down!

Anyone else experience this?

Since your hybrid most likely was built on or before 3-9-22, you might want to look into the TSB for the cold idle surging issue. I find it tweaked more than just the main issue. https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...-hybrid-idle-surge-fix-software-update.12761/

Mine was built in September and had over 70 miles on it when delivered. If I was a betting person, which I'm not, I would say that someone drove it, noticed it, they tried to find the issue and could not replicate it again. Pretty much like any dealer will tell us if we take it to them. I have not experienced it now in about 2000 miles, but 80% of those have been at 70mph+, not the 20-25mph where it seems to occur.

Update and news... I experienced the shuddering again today. Actually, several times and then got a check engine light - which is good news. I was close to my local dealer and went by to have the code checked. At first they told me it would be 3 weeks before they could look at it and I politely asked that, since there is a code, could someone simply plug in a scanner to see what it says. They became more reasonable and did so. P0354 - ignition coil not functioning properly and, as the code indicates, it is related to cylinder #4. So I looked at the coil and wiring for #4 to see if there was anything obvious like a loose or pinched wire. The wires to the harness on the #4 coil pulled straight out of the harness with no resistance.

I told them, I'm no mechanic but I suspect that is the problem. They agreed and ordered a new harness and said it would be in tomorrow and probably be replaced by tomorrow or Friday at the latest. I said they could simply properly crimp the existing ones but they wanted to make it right and do the glowing catalytic converter PCM update while it was there (I've not had the cat issue but why not?).

All of this is very consistent with what I thought the shudder felt like. It occurred mostly at electric motor/ICE handoff or at other higher-demand times for the ICE.

If you are having the shudder issue, give a light tug to the wires going into the individual harnesses that clip onto each of your coils. They should not come out freely. If they do, that will cause a faulty connection and, if it stays below a certain tolerance, you may not get a check engine light.

I would bet money that this is not the issue. It seems to happen when switching to ICE.

On mine it was actually the wires themselves where they go into the back of the harness that plugs into the coil.

Thanks, I checked my wires and they were fine as well. It would be great if this is the issue though because then it would be worth taking to the dealer to troubleshoot.

Another data point, happened again today coming back to work from lunch. Temp was over 60*F, I had just pulled out of my driveway, I was accelerating gently up a slight incline and I felt the ICE kick in, and then about 3 seconds AFTER the ICE kicked in, I got the shudder.

Mine has done it 4 times as well. It stops as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator. I will be saying something when I go for my oil change. I have 3,945 kms on it right now. Other than that mine runs great!

The truck starts out in electric and approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the road, it feels like a 3 sec. shudder when the truck goes from electric to ICE. it shakes the whole truck. I've never experienced this once the truck warms up. I've been contacted by FORD and have a case number assigned. The truck is at the dealer now but I don't think they will find anything in the computer error codes. Nothing shows on the dash (Check engine light). The service advisor showed me the history on the truck and there is a lot documented on Ford's end we don't see through FordPass. I couldn't see anything on this problem from the documentation.

I've been trying to troubleshoot the issue. Recently, I've been starting out in ECO to see if it is common to only NORMAL. I'm not sure what this will tell me but at least I feel like I'm trying something. I also wonder if it's related to gas octane. I've been using 87 for now. I'll wait to see what happens. It may never do it since the weather is getting warmer now. Ford support is trying to help but they just don't have enough to go on for now. The more customers who report the problem, it may move this issue up the channels.

Ford will eventually get to the bottom of this. Personally, I would not release the gas.. I would see how long it would do it and if that could possibly cause more issues. At least then the dealer would have something to go on.

Yesterday I drove 135 KM's and it worked perfectly. I drove on the 402 (120km)for 20 minutes then I exited and took secondary roads (max 90km) driving through small communities so I was adjusting my speeds and it was a fun drive. I noticed on the dash it was 15-16 degree C at one point. I will keep a close eye on what is happening.
