Interesting case study!

Don't like the auto-cutoff. Uh, ok. It saves fuel and you can switch it off I believe?
Not sure how many 2022 vehicles don't have those, not many I'm sure. My last 3 cars had it, going back like 8 years.

And you feel "uneasy" with the the 250 hp Ecoboost. Your "gut is telling you" that the 8 year old, 185 hp engine in your CRV is a superior powerplant.
Gotcha!

There's an old saying in the car bidniss:
There's an ass for every seat!

Let us know what you end up with.

I just bought my Maverick XLT from CarMax this past Friday. Sieve 6 1/2 hours one way to get it.
I’m going to return it to CarMax. I don’t like the auto cut off and w end when it”s disabled the truck does not have a smooth start to it. It’s seams to struggle no matter which mode I’m in form a stopping point
I love the look and feel of it, it the eco boost engine is making me uneasy, so my gut is telling me to take it back to CarMax and get my refund. I traded in a 2014 Honda CRV and that had a much smoother engine in it.

I’m really disappointed. I’ve been looking forward to having a truck. Oh well, I’m gonna trust my gut on this one.

My Mav has spent over 8wks of its short 16 week life at (2) dealerships to fix the parking brake sensor ($7,000 + in parts replaced) and replacing the recalled "tapped" fuel tank. While I understand a good portion of that wait is due to supply chain, it's still very disappointing for a new $33K vehicle. FOMOCO is offering a buy back based on the NJ lemon law, but I'm not sure I want to entertain that since I won't be able to find a replacement easily (and I've dumped a good amount of aftermarket mods on it).
I would let them have it back but ask for a MY23 at the same price. Could you possibly get an extended warranty if you keep it for free?

I already said no to FOMOCO's buy back as I do love the truck and can't find anything else around worthy of replacing it. Only some of the aftermarket mods would've been credited so I would've lost out there as well. I had an F150 as a loaner and it reminded me exactly why I wanted a small truck.

I doubt the guy with the blown transmission, or the one with the blown engine, are thrilled. Both of those were posts I've seen here on this forum, but don't have links handy.

There have been numerous other complaints, such rattling hoods, loud engine noise, lack or insulation between cab and bed, lack of barrier to prevent salt and mud from being kicked up into rear tail light area on driver's side, etc.

So, I think it's safe to say the Maverick is not a perfect vehicle and is not batting 1.000 on reliability or customer satisfaction.

That said, the VAST majority of owners certainly seem pleased, and I remain enthusiastic about purchasing my truck should Ford ever build it.
I'm sure you would be the first to agree that a $20k base truck is not expected to please everyone. I don't know of any vehicle that has 100% reliability or customer satisfaction, but as you said, the vast majority of Maverick owners are pleased. Certainly no other vehicle within recent memory has garnished this much attention and excitement. Would you not agree?

FINALLY! Took delivery of my XLT Hybrid Lux/360 (Carbonized Gray) on March 30.
First impression was that it's more "robust" than I expected. Feels solid. Can't believe how quiet it is around town, noticeably louder at highway speeds (as expected). My only disappointments (so far) are that I would have liked to sit higher in the seat (I'm 5'10) and 18" wheels would have been nice. Other than that, I'm duly impressed by this little truck!

I'll be ticking over 4k miles later today and I'm still in love with this thing. I will admit that I've been thinking about selling to Carmax and putting that extra money for a down payment for a house. My only real grip with the truck is that I wish it had more features for its price point.

My girlfriend recently got a great deal on a pre-owned 2019 Crosstrek and the features it has for its price point blows the Mav out of the water. Heated seats, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, hell of alot better backup camera etc. These are some things that I wish my XLT Maverick had for what I paid for it (features in my sig). But at the same time this truck has been fantastic to drive and the right size for my use. Don't get me wrong, I love this truck but I wish ford had added a bit more features for what I paid.
I just turned over 3,000. No complaints at all except getting rear-ended on return from vacation while driving through Nashville. I need a new bumper and right rear fender, but the truck absorbed the damage from the Toyota Sentra with minimal damage all things considered.

Glad you're ok; sorry to hear about the truck, but it'll be good as new when all's said and done

Sounds like another recall in the works. Definitely Fords fault for making the Maverick too attractive and distracting other drivers.

I love my XL so far, and I’ve put about 650 miles on it. It’s a great little vehicle, given the expectations I had going in considering the price. With that said…

1. The engine can be noisy when cold. This is something my 2011 Fusion does as well and it’s at 86k with zero reliability issues so I think it’s just a quirk. I also think it’s largely because of a general lack of soundproofing between the engine bay and dash (expected at this price).

2. The transmission loves to shift a lot. That’s more because it’s an 8-speed than it is anything else but good grief do these new vehicles have more gears than what I think is actually necessary.

3. Bluetooth connection is horrendously unreliable, and the audio quality from it is absolutely awful. I have an iPhone 11 so I plug it up by USB C and that resolves the audio issue, but even through CarPlay the truck likes to occasionally try to pick up my voice through the phone microphone instead of the truck’s microphone. That said,I’m surprised by the outstanding mic quality and the audio quality from CarPlay - when it’s working properly.

4. The handling characteristics are unexpectedly engaging and it’s a genuinely fun to drive vehicle. That said, the ride is pretty firm and won’t smooth out rough pavement, no doubt a result of additional rigidity and suspension tuning to allow for the Mav’s payload capacity and towing ability.

5. Dude, where are the cupholders? I mean, I know about the water bottle holders but not everyone is a granola-munching health nut. Some of us are just Average Joes out there crushing a can of Monster energy while tackling a weekend home improvement project. I know it’s got two in the center console but it could definitely use some more!

That said, I’ve driven far more expensive vehicles with much more problematic issues. For the money, the truck just can’t be beat.

ROB,

I read through the manual last night and I finally realized the book was a book of "WARNINGS" with some information on about 2 vehicles with different packages and options, but mostly WARNINGS.

When did we get to the point that lawyers write technical manuals for the auto industry?
It was in the mid 1980's

1. There is some insulation you can add between the door hole and engine bay. As well as the hood liner will help.

2. no real fix for the 8 speed transmission, they do it for fuel savings

3. Hopefully software updates fix the buggy entertainment system. I fully expect after-market options eventually. Or even a sync 4 upgrade option from Ford.

4. There will be tons of performance mods to help the ride. Will need to wait and be willing to spend a little money. Suspensions are easy to modify.

5. Where else could they put cup holders? Doors, center console. I know you’re missing the 2 in the rear seat, perhaps add a FITS cup holder?

I guess more money solves most of the issues. Not sure how much you’re willing to put into an XL. Some of these are cheap.

While I've only driven my Maverick a total of 7 miles for a test run because I couldn't take delivery since the sales guy was going on vacation, then I went on vacation and plan to take delivery tomorrow, I'm most disappointed in the shifting pattern between 30-40 mph. Even the Consumers Report article picked up on this and knocked the Mav for it. The truck upshifts and the engine bogs down quite a bit where the engine rpms drop to around 1,500 rpms while city driving. A 2021 ranger I test drove a year ago did essentially the same thing. The above is definitely a "fuel saving" technique, but at the likely expense of damaging the torque converter(TC)/transmission over time. I hope to be able to add "sport mode" (SM) back onto the drive mode menu on my xlt, eb with FX4 using forescan which may prevent the rpms from dropping below about 1,650 rpms while city driving. I didn't realize SM was dropped when adding FX4. I'm willing to give up 1-2 mpgs in city driving to save my TC/transmission the added stress and heat of running too tall a gear at low rpms.
