All I see is click bait video titles. Views, click-throughs, etc for money. No different than any other "influencer", but nothing worth watching IMO.
Nope...he is a genuine tribologist that worked for Joe Gibbs Driven oil for years. His job was testing and designing oils for racing and street use.

Speed has only been on YouTube a couple months and has tens of thousands of followers... pretty good for a guy that doesn't know anything.

Walmart synthetic Supertech oil and a Motorcraft filter and the motor will outlast the vehicle unless there is some manufacturing design flaw or assembly error that even the most premium of oils created by God himself from virgin dinosaurs wouldn’t be able to prevent.

Motor oil is one subject that everyone has an opinion on...me included.

Some of you may have visited the site BITOG..
BOB IS THE OIL GUY. Man if you want misinformation and non fact based opinion that joint is fir you.........
Rick, I don't have any input on the sites you're recommending, but as far as BITOG, I believe there's value in that forum.

There may be misinformation and opinion, but there's intelligent information, too. Just like this site. All sorts of folks with all sorts of ideas. Just have to weed thru for the nuggets of knowledge.

Synthetic is better than conventional. That's about it. The viscosity is based on what the vehicle needs. Use that quality, in the right quantity, and use synthetic to last longer.

I know synthetic is more consistent than convention so it doesn't clump, gunk up, and sludge your engine as you near the end of the oil life. Modern engines are so much better at stopping combustion getting past the pistons into the oil. From keeping the oil from overheating and breaking down. Modern oil,, especially synthetic, is so much better at handling cold starts and 100+ degree outdoor tempts running at 80mph all in the same day.

3000 miles was THE standard for a long, long time. It's not any more. I know some now, as said above, swear by 5000 miles. Or 6000 or even 7000. The book says 10000 for the Hybrid. On 10,000 miles, that is usually around 7000 actual engine miles. And my oil still looks great and hasn't broken down at all. Even Ford's fancy calculator on the FordPass app says I have a lot more % left at 10,000 miles the way I drive.

I could change my oil every 3,000 or 5,000 miles. But this isn't the 90s anymore. And this isn't conventional oil.

Oil change? Just drive it till it throws a rod, stop being suckers and buying so much oil, if I did as many oil changes as some of you I could buy another engine. 😛 🤣

I'm a every 5k miles guy. Why? Better question, why on earth should we trust some algorithm to tell when the oil needs to be changed (oil life indicator)? Considering this algorithm comes from the same company that needs multiple software updates to get turn signals and brake lights working properly, I think not. 🤣

I gave up on bitog years ago... especially those posts by 540rat... he was on virtually every forum know to God. Same posts...same opinions.

He was a firm believer in that one armed bandit bearing scar test even though it's validity had been throughly debunked by guys who were actually IN the motor oil biz.

As far as oil goes today I look for an oil that has excellent shear stability. All these chains and sprokets and gears kill the shear stability in any oil. If you do regular low mileage oil changes it won't matter much. But I plan on keeping this Maverick until I assume room temperature ( which might be tomorrow!).

Never gave shear a thought until I realized how uncommon it was to run a heavy truck engine just shy of 2,000,000 miles without a major engine inframe rebuild.

And I did it on 50,000 mile oil changes with Dino oil. Filter changes every 10k with oil analysis every 20k.

Plus an additive which is almost a pure viscosity index improver to achieve oil shear stability.

The CAT engine has a complex set of gears running the valve train that can kill an oil. Didn't know that back then but I know now. And I know the foreman at the CAT dealer told me he had never seen an engine as clean as mine with that mileage.

One secret was to stop idling. My idle time over the last 1,000,000 miles was 6%. The fleet I drive for today averages 35% idle time...that's an engine killer.

Anywho... I'm going to sample some oils and see how they compare to each other. Then I'll pick one and stick to it.

I had great luck with the old Pennzoil PureBase diesel oil...made from NG.

I also am a big fan of CenPeCo oils but I have never used their synthetics. But I used their dino stuff in my race cars and trucks during the 80's.

Pennzoil Ultra is in the running.

I have been using Federated private label semi synthetic in my high mileage Buick for the last 90,000 miles.

Man I gotta end it here...I'm starting to sound like 540rat!!!

I figured it out.
Cheapest bid won the contract.
The old. These should be good enough, mentality.
Yup, they'll make it to end of warranty for a majority of customers and that's good nuff fer Ford. There's enough profit baked in to replace CV joints for them that wear em out and know enough to notice but not enough profit for them to use a better product which is a damn shame considering it would probably cost Ford $5 a joint.

I don't want to start a fight but follower count doesn't indicate anything beyond good advertising and catchy enough titles. People will follow almost anyone on there.
Heck, one of my youtube accounts has 8-9 followers and I've never posted a video.

Far as I'm concerned synthetic oil changed at 5k is plenty good, especially since I'm not driving commercial and there's zero chance that my Maverick will ever rack 500,000 miles let alone millions.

Lake speed is very good at his job. For me I enjoy the in depth oil stuff. So it is part of my hobby that I enjoy.
So I’m not one to join a cult or freak out but I enjoy it. I like my cars. With that said I’m also one of the few who will wear out an engine before the vehicle. I drive 80-100k a year and work the crap out of my engines. I can say that two things have always stuck out between oil brands.

The good ones hold up to heat much better. When the heat gets high they still work. Number two, oil dilution. Some oils can hold much more fuel and still protect from wear.
so for the average guy nope no need to worry. If you enjoy it Awsome.
Yes I do oil reports. I change when the light tells me unless I am close and know I have a tough task for it and long drive.
Just changed it with 30 percent left cause I’m hauling a decent load out to Co from Mich and back.

It's so bizarre to me how people make oil so complicated now.

Are there cults for other lubricants, like diff oil, transmission fluid, and lithium grease?
For trans fluid, absolutely. And similar to oil threads, the assumptions start with 1) the OEM's are idiots, 2) the OEM's are conspiratorial and want your engine/trans to blow up shortly after warranty, 3) only the aftermarket *fill in brand* are competent, honest and superior to OEM, 4) your anecdotal experience with one or a few vehicles, for your conditions, is to be universally applied. 5) enough said, case closed, good enough for grandpappy, good enough for me, etc.

Actual facts, statistically significant testing, or now days lab testing of YOUR fluid for YOUR driving scenario, are either not believed or refuted with 1 ~ 5 above. Over and frickin' over again..until some threads achieve many hundreds of posts and people get pissed off enough to get themselves banned.

😁 I love #4
Don't forget. They've been doing something for 40 years and nothing's happened, so it must be right, even if it isn't.

I watch Lake Speed Jr's channel, he gives good science based information.
There's no way I'm going to run Ford's break-in oil for 10K miles in my Maverick, just my opinion, and with that and $3.50 you can buy a cup of Joe.
