My A.I. says, " Full synthetic motor oil does expire, but it generally has a longer shelf life compared to conventional oil. Unopened synthetic motor oil can last about 7 to 8 years if stored properly in a cool, temperature-controlled environment out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Once opened, it can start to degrade within 6 to 12 months due to exposure to air and contaminants. The main issue is the degradation of additives in the oil, which reduces its effectiveness in lubricating and protecting the engine over time. Even if unused, synthetic motor oil loses lubrication properties beyond its shelf life, typically around 5 years for unopened containers and shorter when opened. Proper storage conditions significantly impact its longevity. " Take that info as you will.
Thanks ChatGPT. 🙄

One may buy oil in 6, 1 quart bottle cartons. My Can Am Spyder Rt uses 5.4 qts/oil change. I use the extra in my walk behind mowers.
Oil does not spoil on the shelf, especially unopened. I have never seen an expiration date on a modern oil container.

My point was, retailers will put the 5 quart bottle on sale, but stiff you on the 1 quart bottle needed for the "extra" you need to do the oil change....sometimes, you can also find the "6-pack" on sale too...but more often than not, it is the "5 quart bottle and oil filter" package sales that rely on that lure to get you in the door.

Truth be told. The 5 quarts became commonplace when the VAST MAJORITY of vehicles held 5 Qts, back in the day. Everything from a 2,0L pinto to a 460 (7,5L) Lincoln Continental held 5 Qts. Today oil capacity is all over the place. But the 5qt bottle remains. Some also offer 4qts. A few offer 6. But 5 is still the most common. And a single QT is usually going to be more expensive per quantity than a larger quantity. That's usually true for any product.
