Motor oil is one subject that everyone has an opinion on...me included.

Some of you may have visited the site BITOG..
BOB IS THE OIL GUY. Man if you want misinformation and non fact based opinion that joint is fir you.

If you want REAL oil info from a guy that actually formulated oils in the real world visit Lake Speed Jr's. "motoroilgeek" YouTube page.

I attended one of Speed's oil seminars about 10 years ago when he worked for Driven oil. Learned a bunch... no sales pitches's only facts.

A stand up guy...yes he IS a geek!

Watch and learn...

The biggest factor I have learned is we need to be concerned with is having oil shear kill our engines. All these chains, sprokets and gears in the valve train destroy the additive packages that keep our oils in spec.

I grew up learning that oil doesn't wear out...but the additive package does.

You will have to pack a lunch, sit down with your internet device and watch these videos several times to really absorb what is being presented.

My last Peterbilt with a CAT 3406E engine went 1,918,000 miles before it's first rebuild. I always used a viscosity index improver additive to the oil as matter or habit. Now I think I know why that engine lasted so long.

Enjoy the info...

is there supposed to be a video here?
I didn't post a link just his YouTube user name.... for some reason I'm having an issue with linking a video.

Just search for " motor oil geek"...you'll find him.

here's one that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the oil itself.

regarding the filter, both Maverick engines use a very small capacity filter. that's the real reason you should consider shorter than 10k change intervals with full synthetic.

Nope. Modern engines are highly unlikely to clog a filter. There are also high capacity filters available, for those that worry.

If this is the "info" those videos provide, that's all I need to know.

uh, no. the video is 500k miles on 2 identical ecoboost 2.3 one with full synthetic and the other blend.

it was posted weeks ago in it's own thread, I'm surprised you didn't see it then.

it's not going to clog. it's that the filter life is shorter than the oil life.

A standard filter can make it 10k miles (or whatever the OLM is telling you is your OCI).

Also that video seemed to focus on tarnish a lot. Maybe a stuck ring(s)? What about actual wear? Was the engine that ran on conventional out of spec? Burning oil? etc? Who here is going to keep their Maverick EB to 500k miles? All the boomers will be long dead first. Its hard to see how this is applicable to a consumer and whether to follow the manu's OCI.
Synthetic oil = better. Got it. I don't dispute that and have always use syn bought on sale.
Nothing new and not part of the oil change debates that always come up here. Its always - I change mine at 3k b/c I know best. No evidence needed. Can't be too safe / etc.

Also, our hybrids take synthetic - no reason 10k OCI (following the OLM) will be "bad".

I've never put 500k miles on any car I've owned, or bought one with over 100k that I then put another 100k+ on it, but it's still interesting and kind of useful to see how well full synthetic performs.

the average life of a new vehicle before being totaled ranges from 11 to 16 years (found in 2 different conflicting surveys) and about 150k miles, so when we're looking at wear patterns more than triple that, it's of course somewhat academic.

I’m not going to read any of it. There is nothing ā€˜NEW’ that could possibly be said about oil.
They have figured out oil but they haven’t figured out CV joints. That sort of stuff I’ll read.

I figured it out.
Cheapest bid won the contract.
The old. These should be good enough, mentality.
