Please bear (no claws) with me. First tank of gas, screen said I was at 581 miles and had one partial bar on the fuel gauge and next to it, it said 51 miles. I decided that was all good, but needed to fill up (short trip tomorrow) After the fill up, which took 12.79 gallons, the total mileage reading said 531 miles. So, I got 41.6 mpg.......pretty confused. What happened to the 581 miles?

So I hit over 800 miles on one tank for the 1st time, and probably the last time unless I have a backup fuel tank with me.

812.2.jpg

I hit the "0 Mi to E" at 745 miles. From this point I set my Trip 2 to record the mileage after the gauge said I hit 0.

0 Miles to E.jpg

I usually fill up when I hit or are close to the system's estimate of zero miles left. In those cases my fill up would be anywhere between 13.7-14.1 gallons. After seeing a post of someone filling up to 16 gal I thought I would push my luck. I did have a 1 gal back up gas container after I hit zero, but will not plan to do this often. Unless you usually have a rack with backup fuel container just fill up. Not worth pushing it especially since you dont know what driving style you will use for those las 2-2.5 gallons. I made it to 67 miles past 0 so I assumed that I was at bout 15 gal used. I did my usual three clicks at the pump and I assumed wrong.

Trip 2 Data.jpg

I used 14.8 gal witch came out to 54.8 MPG on this tank (best ever was 55.7 mpg). I did take the freeways more than I thought I would and I also did a long drive from San Jose to Manteca during rush hour with an accident, about 60 miles one-way 120 roundtrip. On the way back I was not in traffic, so if someone in the central valley has a Maverick and they drive both ways on HY 680 and HY 580 what kind of MPGs and MPT are you getting?

Fill-up Pump.jpg

If the tank does actually hold 16.5 gal as on post suggested, the it could be possible to hit 900 miles on one tank, but I wont be trying that anytime soon. I might but not unless the conditions are right and I have time to get out on the side of the road with a filled backup tank.
I would be careful about running that low on fuel. I was told by several techs that the in-tank electric fuel pump is supposed to be immersed in fuel to keep it cool. Running that low can expose the pump and cause it to overheat, seriously reducing its lifespan.

If you drive until MTE 0 and/or empty indicated, this means you have used about 13.8 gallons of your 16.5 gallon tank.

13.8 is what you are able to use without concern. 13.8 is not the physical tank size. 13.8 is the "usable" tank size.

I hope this helps you get more enjoyment from your Maverick.

What you have done most recently will affect your MTE number.

So if MPG was lower recently, your MTE will be lower. But have no fear, it can also extend the other way if MPG increases.

It says 531 today. But you could burn half a tank and have 300 miles remaining, for example.

Basically the computer can't see into the future. So MTE is only going to match perfectly if nothing changes during your tank of driving. For me, I've gone 6 weeks between fill-ups. Hell, the seasons can change in that time frame.

MTE is recent driving efficiency x 13.8 gallons x % tank level today.

Example City Drive Today:
45 MPG x 13.8 x 80% full = 497 MTE

The next day I drive on the highway at 75 MPH for 100 miles. I got 32 MPG this day. There is a blending formula I'm not certain of but "close" will be:

Average? 39 MPG x 13.8 x 55% full = 296 MTE.

I drove 100 miles, but MTE dropped 201. Why? Because I changed from all city driving to all highway driving.

Thanks GPSman...that makes sense. Not going to worry, but I do try to conserve. When in EV coach and when it says electric...I find myself pumping then letting off of the "go" pedal. I guess I have turned it into a challenge.

My reply was based on Ford's online specs that state the hybrid's fuel tank size as precisely 13.8 gallons. You'd think if it also had a 2.7 gallon reserve tank, that they would tell you that in the specs.

The manual won't help, your friend is this group. Your MTE should have been more than what you posted, but our truck is new and still learning. Also the MPG that your Maverick will show is roughly 2 MPG higher than the manually calculated number. Since filling up, has your MTE gotten higher?

They DO tell you there is a reserve - they just don't tell you how much it is...

Pg 178 of the Maverick Owner's Manual:
FUEL TANK CAPACITY
Advertised Capacity
The advertised capacity is the maximum amount of fuel that your can add to the fuel tank when the fuel gauge indicates empty.

Pg 179: (continuation of the above)
Fuel and Refueling
In addition, the fuel tank contains an empty reserve. The empty reserve is an unspecified amount of fuel that remains in the fuel tank when the fuel gauge indicates empty.
Note: The amount of fuel in the empty reserve varies and shout not be relied upon to increase driving range.

Notice the portions I highlighted in red... There is some fuel remaining (amount unspecified) when the gauge reads empty.

Many of us have come to the conclusion that Ford is using the same size tank in both Eco and Hybrid models, with the difference being that the Hybrid has a "pressurized" tank that probably reduces the usable volume somewhat. That just makes sense from a parts commonality standpoint.

I've pumped 14.2 gallons into my Hybrid tank (when it still showed about 5 miles to empty). Others say they have pumped in more than 15 gallons into theirs.

But to paraphrase the manual: "Don't count on that 'reserve' to always be there, so don't try to increase your driving range by consuming the reserve."

I made it over 800 miles with my latest tank, just to prove to myself that I could do it. Don't really intend to do it again. This tank used normal mode, never put it in eco. It hit the 0 MTE point at about 790 miles and I had a gas can with me just in case. It hit 800.1 as I pulled into the gas station so that is where I stopped the tank. I'm confident I could have gone quite a bit further, just don't like to run the tank low. Hand calculated it to be 54.8mpg for the tank.

@Waterick I agree.

Someone mused if 900 miles were possible from one fill-up.

100% yes. I'd do it and post the video to YouTube if a bunch of you want to take up a collection for prize money. 😎

Do one start-up; or better yet, start on a hot engine just after refueling.

Set cruise control to 40 mph.
Drive continuously for 22.5 hours.
Boom. 900 miles.

But I don't want to sit in the truck for 22.5 hours and pee in a Gatorade bottle for nothing.
I'm in for $0.05/mile 1132 mile try from Loveland pass, Colorado (elevation 11,990') to Corpus Christi, Texas (via Boise City, Oklahoma to avoid Pass on I-25). Additional alterations permitted to avoid perceived lower mpg areas. Extra battery to hold (50kw ?) Generated from Loveland to Denver will NOT BE PERMITTED.

Congrats!

Are you sure it's not a Fluke?
Wait, it is a Fluke!

(sorry, couldn't resist)

I know the area well.

You can't regen a continuous 50kWh going down the largest hill in America. More like 5kWh. Still. 12,000 feet of elevation would help for sure.
