Niro is my Plan B, too, also for the MPG. Gently used in my area can be had for mid to high 20's. I'll lay down and cry like a little girl though, if I have to go that route. I want my little red truck.
I drive a 2017 Hybrid Niro, which I'm going to give to my son when (if?) I get my Maverick. It is a great set of wheels, and on occasion (cruise control, long trips) I've gotten close to 50 mpg. There have been times during this wait that I've considered getting another Niro, and there are few other cars I would look at as an alternative to the Maverick.
I actually gave it to my kid last fall when I put in my order. Clearly, I didn't know the wait I was facing. Like a prince, he gave it back to me so I'm not driving his 2003 Corolla.

It'll be interesting to see the impact of the 3rd shift for July scheduling.
It won't make a bit of difference if your dealer is out of Maverick allocations. Unless Ford decides to increase allocations for dealers that still have unfilled customer orders, I think it will just end up as some other dealer's stock.

This is what frustrates me about this whole process. There is enough manufacturing capacity to build every EB ordered for 2023, but if your dealer doesn't have enough allocations, many order holders will still get screwed.

I got on the list at a local Toyota dealer for a 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid, which should start arriving at dealers in June. Just a regular hybrid, but with 196hp, standard AWD, and 42mpg starting at around $28k it's a compelling option.

That is not how allocations work. A dealer does not have a set number of allocations. Think of dealer allocations as a percentage of factory production. If the factory produces more vehicles, all dealers will get higher allocation numbers.

If that's the case, that's great and I'll happily stand corrected. I've seen several posters here comment that their dealers told them they had xx allocations - not a percentage of what is built. So if that number does in fact go up as more vehicles are built, then everyone with an EB order should get their truck, right?

Those XX dealer allocations are estimated based upon various factors such as:
  • Your dealer sells the same number of vehicles as last year
  • Other dealers in your dealers region sell the same number of vehicles as last year
  • The factory produces the originally planned number of Mavericks
Planned production probably did not include a 3rd shift since there was no guarantee the Ford parts suppliers could provide the additional parts for a 3rd shift. This is something Ford probably recently negotiated with the parts suppliers.

Odds are in your favor with an EB but not guaranteed. Allocations are still king and if your dealer took way more orders than allocations, some of their EB may not be made.

I posted this earlier, but Woody Anderson in north Alabama has five on the lot, three new Tremors with BAP, one of them is hybrid. But all have markups. If you don't care about that, they're listed online, readily available.

Automate has good points about allocation.

Here is another that will make you wonder at first, and might explain some lack of rollover hybrids getting built.

Automate mentions Dealers in certain regions and how a Dealer compares...

Take that a BIG step further and factor in Fords marketing plan across the US. Ford will allocate certain products to certain areas. For instance, If Ford wants hybrid/plug-in sales to boom in California, then California Dealers will get a much higher allocation. We saw this when the first Hybrid Escapes were coming out. Live in Connecticut, no problem with getting one. Not so good in Texas.....

Granger Ford adds markups if you don't live in Iowa.
