I have topped off my vehicles for decades, never have had an issue. On the wife's Honda I can add another 2.5-3 gallons after the first click. On the Maverick, up to 2 gallons.

Fill to first click, wait a few seconds and fill to second click, stop. I don't get much extra gas in the tank from the short extra pull; Maybe a half gallon. Never had a problem with any vehicle, and I've been driving for almost 50 years. JAT

For every mechanic or article that says don't top off, you'll find a mechanic or article that says it's ok. I have never done it. I put it in and when it clicks I take it out. And I can say I've never had an issue either and I don't think I miss that extra half gallon or gallon.

I fill with pump on slowest rate and stop at first click. One more click if set on fastest fill rate is probably no more than the slow one click. "Topping off is 3-8 clicks and tablespoon full at last click. Then drive to Ford for service visit when check light comes on.

2nd click method yielded me a 15.1 gal fillup on Hybrid.

True, 1st click was almost there, but since going fast flow I wanted the 2nd click from the slower flow rate, just in case there was actually more than minimum to go.

Please no one start on problems emptying tank - was only the 2nd fillup so no junk was at bottom anyway, if I was even near the bottom.

I always land the cents amount on a certain number to make sure that credit card theives are foiled, so I nearly always have to add a little bit more to match that number, not worried about the gas amount cause it won't amount to much more.

Thx for sharing,I have been topping off for almost 50 years, and have done so with our maverick for the past 2 years,no issues.i know the maverick is a " modern" vehicle.
They have similar warnings for the hybrid but below is the warnings from Ford on owners manual non hybrid.

https://www.fordservicecontent.com/...A&div=f&vFilteringEnabled=False&buildtype=web

FYI the way I read this is the damage and possible fire or explosion from it. Just wondered in 50 years you picked up a gas can and went to open it and it spurted fuel because the gas in the can expanded and pressurized. I'm wondering if this is what or why the warnings. Fumes are explosive, where gas is combustible. Then again what do I know, besides the warnings Ford put in the owners manual.

Plenty of warning but specifically look for this one on refueling

▲ WARNING: Stop refueling when the fuel pump nozzle automatically shuts off for the first time. Failure to follow this will fill the expansion space in the fuel tank and could lead to fuel overflowing.
