I really think ,self insured with a bond on file at the dmv is the way to go nowadays with all the caps and restrictions insurance companies are putting on payouts and addendums all while raising rates .
I pay insurance on 7 current cars and have another 2 on non op , so they only have comprehensive on them .
The bond situation covers the driver always and covers the 10% of the amount i want for coverage .
Granted i wont earn interest on that as it sits in bond but the current rate of increases ive been getting i think im at about $300-400 a month plus i carry $55 a month for a million dollar umbrella policy.(liability)
Insurance is such a scam ,
All total i average close to $10k a year with houses and have not filed a claim but for a $4k theft 5 years ago out of last 25 years!

Just spent a few days in Charlotte NC this past week (got home to AZ in the he last hour). So many unthoughtful, selfish, aggressive, speeding drivers. Just hated it. Driving ruined the whole place for me. Y'all from Charlotte are in need of an intervention.
Gee thanx, our next camp is just south of Charlotte but I know from previous trips they're stinking CRAZY drivers near big cities, I drove 200 miles out of my way to miss Cincinnati, Chicago ain't no picnic either.

I'm the guy towing Grampy's Campy in the right lane usually 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit, because the trucks are usually passing me in my lane, pushing me into the service lane and then there is the Cha-Cha's and street racers in their lowriders that want to take off your bumper instead of giving a couple of car lengths to merge. Guessing if I mount a bazooka on the hood I might get arrested?

Sstupid railgaters
It was July 21, I was on my way with my pop up camper to the camping site to meet my brother and some friends for a whole week of holiday in great company. Unfortunately I never made it. About Half way there when the traffic slow down because of roadwork, the car behind me never brake, hit me in the trailer and push me in the minivan in front of me, then hit me a second time. Results: camper is totalled, maverick have at least 21 000$ in damage (in Canadian money) and my holiday are ruined.

With these damage and all the thread about rear ended mavericks being totalled, I was sure mine will be also and I started to tell to myself it was the best time to order a 2025. Until my insurance said nope, we are fixing it. All that I learned is that they asked the body shop to check some precise parts and they were undamaged so they will fit it.

am I the only one to think that repair of that value will cause a big value loss? I am now waiting for soon 2 months, they told me 1 part ordered is still back order

I think $21,000 in damages would be totaled. Do you have any pictures you can show us?
Mine doesn’t look like there is that much damage because we see only the front bumper damaged but the minivan had a tow ball on the hitch and it caused all the radiator and their support to be damaged without damaging the hood, fender and headlight. For the rear we see only that the trailer hitch is bent but no idea of what more damage is under there. But I do saw that both side of the bed were touching the tailgate after the crash. Not enough to prevent it from opening but it’s a pretty good sign that there is frame damage.

NC drivers are mostly clueless, checked out, and not aggressive. Charlotte included.

sorry you had trouble navigating our beloved state.
I enjoyed my time in Greensboro. Totally different experience while driving. Didn't experience any of the 'a turn signal is a personal challenge' that was routine in Charlotte.

I suspect it's that I've become a much more defensive, cautious and patient driver as I've gotten older (I'm not 'old', just 55, but don't drive like I'm between 16-24 yrs old). A little bit of time and distance (longer following distances buys you more time) helps you to react soon enough to avoid calamaties. Get disappointed that folks can't figure that basic tenet out... Oh well...

NC is gorgeous and I've enjoyed the entirety of it over some 39 years. Every part of it has something to appreciate. This trip was a marathon to visit family and old friends in Radford and Marion VA, Knoxville and Sevierville TN, and Greensboro and Charlotte NC over 8 days. Yeah... lots of time behind the windshield of that rented 2023 Chrysler 300 Sport (was supposed to be a Ford Explorer, but that's a different conversation).

It might not be totaled. I have 2 claims on mine, one for the door and fender (someone backed into it in a parking lot) and then a tree fell on it while waiting for parts to come in! Sitting at $21k US in damages right now and currently being rebuilt. $5k for the door and fender and $16k for the tree damage (hood, roof, body side and tailgate). I really don't worry about "diminished value" because I keep my vehicles until I junk them. Don't depend on cheap insurance and you'll be OK.
If you have more than one claim and damages from each claim separately are not a total amount then each claim is handled separately with two or more deductibles.

as long as the trailer would pop up and just tear off the front bumper on maverick I would continue on my way to the vacation - worry about it later

Unfortunately all the radiator assembly was broken (radiator, intercooler, a/c condenser…) so no way to continue (seized engine might have been what was missing to get it totaled 😂)

exactly - somehow Carfax gets a hold of the damage and the repair costs and then these are used to show the 'value' of your fixed ride - I've seen other posts where owners have pursued diminished value and their insurance companies have ponied up for the difference.
Just speaking from recent past experience with an accident and its police report. The DCSO officer wrote "Driver 3 (the one who rear-ended me) failed to control his speed." Like with OP, it was pretty obvious. I don't know if they were actually cited. I’m sure it varies. 🤷‍♂️

Seems like Canadian procedures are different anyway.
Correct on both accounts. It's a document of investigation but the officer is a qualified investigator fit to make a decision on fault.

That's the difference between following someone and trying to detain them then ending up on trial for assault (or worse) vs. just calling an officer and giving them the info. They are looked as as qualified by the state and all it's elected officials, and we are just random idiots with zero training and nothing behind us. Always good to have their documentation in a case like this (unless you are the idiot at fault of course lol).

In the past I've made the mistake of having them not show up and not bothering with their reports. Then it's 100% your word vs. the other parties and there is a strong chance they are going to lie to their insurance and their insurance is going to make things harder than it should be.

I'd rather wait an hour for an officer to show up even if they do nothing. It's another witness and one that has a decent amount of weight behind their investigation.

That’s the reason it’s not totaled on the full amount. No deductibles, either.

Plus it increases claim count which will create a review by underwriting and may affect renew ability.

I also recall seeing that a loss of value after repairs is not covered.
Georgia is the only state that requires first-party (ie with your own insurance) diminished value claims as they officially had case judgement to establish it for 3rd/1st along with a deciding formula. All other states it'd be claimed it against the other party's insurance and they may not be compelled to furnish any unless you can demonstrably prove loss of value (versus a hypothetical if you still have the vehicle).
