$21k CAD in damage??? My previous vehicle was hit from behind too, with $12k USD of damage, and the body shop wouldn’t even do a job that big. Since it was only worth about $12,000 anyway, it was totaled, but I guess at least now you know your truck is worth significantly more than $21k+. Really hope you are getting a rental/loaner.

By the way, why is YOUR insurance involved? If the other party is at fault, normally (at least in the US) the other party’s insurance should handle everything.

Sorry about all of it. Good luck with whatever debacles come next.
Usually your insurance gets your vehicle to a shop and pays to have it repaired as soon as possible. Then they go after the other persons insurance to get repaid. Otherwise it would take months before it would be fixed.

I really think ,self insured with a bond on file at the dmv is the way to go nowadays with all the caps and restrictions insurance companies are putting on payouts and addendums all while raising rates .
I pay insurance on 7 current cars and have another 2 on non op , so they only have comprehensive on them .
The bond situation covers the driver always and covers the 10% of the amount i want for coverage .
Granted i wont earn interest on that as it sits in bond but the current rate of increases ive been getting i think im at about $300-400 a month plus i carry $55 a month for a million dollar umbrella policy.(liability)
Insurance is such a scam ,
All total i average close to $10k a year with houses and have not filed a claim but for a $4k theft 5 years ago out of last 25 years!
I always make sure my liability coverage exceeds the current max payout averages. Although our insurance system has moved to a no fault model (don't get me started) I still feel it is necessary. A little over a decade ago I was involved in a life altering accident (not at fault). The other driver had two lawyers negotiating for him at the table. One from the insurance company and one for him personally because he bought the lowest amount of liability insurance legally possible at the time and there was a very good chance the amount agreed upon was going to exceed his coverage.

GET A DEMINISHED VALUE CLAIM GOING!

An accident of that magnitude will absolutely impact the value. In fact, on a VIN check it is going to show as a major accident. It will still have a clean title, but it will have a major accident on record. Some companies will even indicate where the damage to the vehicle was and what kind.

Trying to sell a vehicle that has a major accident is going to be difficult and you will take a substantial hit on value. 30%-40% wouldn't be out of line.

I would wager the only thing keeping it from being totaled is that the airbags didn't go off. Had they popped the insurance would have scrapped the truck.

I'm the guy towing Grampy's Campy in the right lane usually 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit, because the trucks are usually passing me in my lane, pushing me into the service lane and then there is the Cha-Cha's and street racers in their lowriders that want to take off your bumper instead of giving a couple of car lengths to merge. Guessing if I mount a bazooka on the hood I might get arrested?
"I leave a sizeable gap between myself and the vehicle in front of me for safety, not so you can squeeze in!"

I find myself yelling this aloud while driving more and more.

That is not how it (typically) works in the U.S. and it has never worked that way. The only time your insurance is going to cut a check for an accident another person caused is if they didn't have insurance and you had uninsured motorist coverage.

Edit: Added "typically" above.

On a different topic, does your Sprinter handle towing the Mav okay. I.E., would you recommend?
It does a great job and I would certainly recommend. You really have to be careful of all the idiots who just can't be behind a vehicle towing something. It's hard to tell when someone is going to be stupid, but it happens so often..

No, that is entirely how collision insurance works. The insurance pays for your repairs regardless of fault and other party's coverages. Although if they determine the liability of the other party is sufficiently pursuable then they subrogate; sue on your behalf to recover for the cost of damages. Edit to add: For instance here in NY we don't even have such a thing as un(der)insured motorist property damage (only supplemental for bodily injury); you just buy collision coverage.

NC drivers are mostly clueless, checked out, and not aggressive. Charlotte included.

sorry you had trouble navigating our beloved state.
Drivers everywhere nowadays are just plain distracted. Way too many screens to check and mess with, taking drivers eyes off the road.

The way that I read this, traffic had “slowed down”, not stopped, when the maverick was hit. In my state, if you are stopped, then hit and pushed into the car in front of you, you are not at fault. But if you are still moving, you are not at fault for getting hit from the rear, but you are at fault for hitting the person in front of you for not allowing proper following distance. So that’s my question… was he still moving when he got hit?

Wow, hate to see all that. The good thing is everyone is OK, thats the most important!
That hitch receiver sure seems out of wack. Make sure they check the crumple zones underneath the bed for damage.
You really nailed this one. The hitch receiver is bent 5-10 degrees to the right. Even if they straighten it back out, the underlying structural metal will still have crumples and creases which will weaken this area, which effectively decreases the safe tow rating. I’m surprised the body shop didn’t say that the rear unibody wasn’t able to be correctly repaired.

Just spent a few days in Charlotte NC this past week (got home to AZ in the he last hour). So many unthoughtful, selfish, aggressive, speeding drivers. Just hated it. Driving ruined the whole place for me. Y'all from Charlotte are in need of an intervention.
We just want to be like a real city.

We were just hit a few months ago. The only insurance company doing anything was the other driver's insurance. It was 100% handled and paid by them, to our chosen body shop, coordinated by us. We called our insurance to ask about this exact scenario being discussed.

The other times people have hit us? Same thing.

An insurance company is not going to pay out for a claim their driver isn't at fault for just to turn around and have the expense of going after the other insurance company. Just hoping the other company doesn't decide to stonewall and cause a legal fight that costs even more. Insurance companies aren't in the business of chasing down money unless absolutely necessary.

quebec province in Canada is a « no fault state » and insurance are mandatory. So your insurance pay for your damages and then sue the Insurance of the responsible for that amount.
Quebec sucks

Then you don't have the proper insurance. Or should be filing a DOI complaint against your insurer. Yes, if you only have Liability insurance your insurer doesn't care when someone else hits you or you damage your own vehicle, but collision is 100% to indemnify you for damages to your vehicle while driving.
