I thought it would be fun to build a calculator to determine how many miles you need to drive to justify the $1500 hybrid premium.

Number of Miles = (($1500/ Avg_$/Gallon) * Hybrid_MPG) / ((Hybrid_MPG / Ecoboost_MPG) - 1)

If I use the Car & Driver Average MPG figures:
Hybrid: 42 City & 33 Highway = 37.5 MPG
Ecoboost: 22 City & 29 Highway = 25.5 MPG

I use local gas prices average (Irvine, California, US): $4.58

Number of Miles = (($1500/$4.58)*37.5)/((37.5/25.5)-1) = 26,100 miles.

I don't know if you find this useful or not... Yet, it was fun creating the formula. ;)
Cool! But for those of us who want to tow cars behind our motorhomes, that invaluable benefit, only available with the hybrid, can't be quantified.

lol @ "only warrantied for 8 years"

how long is the turbo warranty on the EBs again?
I know what you are getting at, with the warranty...but it all depends....

My dealership gives a 20yr/200k warranty included on any new purchase. The service writer explained it to me the other day (during my oil change) as like the basic Ford ESP that they cover for 20yr 200k. The service writer explained it as a way to upsell the higher ESP that cover electronics, window motors, etc... that the normal 20yr200k my dealer offers...doesn't cover.

here is a screenshot of it...

It looks like most hybrid owners will break even on the new $1,500 premium within 2-3 years. However, keep in mind most of the MY24 hybrids produced will probably be MY23 rollovers, so a new hybrid order may not be fulfilled.

Also, Ford's hybrid battery is only warrantied for 8-years max (10 in Cali). Depending on how long you keep the vehicle, a battery replacement could significantly diminish your fuel savings depending on the life of the original hybrid battery.
But with hybrid you will probably never have to change the brakes, no turbo to worry about, etc.

Also the truck will drive fine even if the battery won't hold charge anymore. The price difference would've been paid back long before that.

Thankfully my Hybrid is being built as a 2023. I will start saving money the day I get it, and with 90% of my driving being city driving, the hybrid reward will be huge.

The equation assumes that fuel will remain at that price.

This is highly unlikely. Higher prices will follow the inflationary trend we are now experiencing in spades.

Another part of the equation missing, and maybe even more important, is the distinct possibility of fuel shortages.

People have short memories and have very little idea what’s going on in the geopolitical world, specifically with the waning petrodollar.

Can’t happen here though right?

But isn’t the Hybrid an up charge for 24?🧐*********
You are correct,we have a C-Max in the family that has over 100,000 on its original brakes. And they look very, very good.

I think the average buyer of a new vehicle sells it within 7-8 years. I don't expect any big issues from either engine option in that time.

26K miles until payback is pretty reasonable. There are people on this forum that are already past 26K miles, and for typical drivers that's less than 2 years of driving. And that assumes gas prices don't go up.

Gas prices have steadily dropped over the last year. I wouldn't fear a raise this year, we are already in the highest price part of the year, and it's still dropping.

When I drove to the dealer because he said my 2024 order was ready to sign Monday, I drove 2.1 miles from a UPS location...and the display said I got 70.1 MPG for that tiny trip. Makes me smile every time I shut off the truck and see the readout.
.
I have 1450 miles on the truck, 900 of which were on 70-80 MPH highways...and my overall mileage is 37.5 and climbing as most of my trips are usually in town.

for every ~24-25k miles, the EB needs (5) oil changes and the Hybrid is good to go with (3). Factor in the cost of 2 oil changes.....

My wife drives a 2022 plug-in hybrid Escape SEL. She is a teacher. Her average MPG is still heading up since she drives in EV mode during the summer. Her average MPG rises from 85 during the school year to over 200 during the summer.

We have solar (with battery backup) which generates more electricity than we consume during the summer. Thus, she drives her Escape for free during most of the summer.
