I thought it would be fun to build a calculator to determine how many miles you need to drive to justify the $1500 hybrid premium.

Number of Miles = (($1500/ Avg_$/Gallon) * Hybrid_MPG) / ((Hybrid_MPG / Ecoboost_MPG) - 1)

If I use the Car & Driver Average MPG figures:
Hybrid: 42 City & 33 Highway = 37.5 MPG
Ecoboost: 22 City & 29 Highway = 25.5 MPG

I use local gas prices average (Irvine, California, US): $4.58

Number of Miles = (($1500/$4.58)*37.5)/((37.5/25.5)-1) = 26,100 miles.

I don't know if you find this useful or not... Yet, it was fun creating the formula. ;)

Wow, we pay $3.15 to $3.34. The big difference for hybrid is if you drive mostly city accoding to the threads of them getting 50, 60, 100 mpg. Then it pays back in 2 weeks.

If I plug-in 45 MPG City for Hybrid and 22 MPG City for EB,
If I plug-in an average of $3.25/gallon,
It would take 21,356 miles to pay off the hybrid.

I have been keeping track of miles/day and it would take me almost two years (490 days) at $4.58/gallon. In other words, it still pays to get the hybrid if you live somewhere gas is expensive.

I prefer the 8-speed transmission that comes with the Ecoboost and the independent rear suspension with the AWD. I owned a 22 XL Hybrid and sold it quickly. I am much happier with the 23 XLT EB AWD. To each their own...

Thanks for commenting. I am looking forward to hearing other people's thoughts and opinions.

As someone in the Analytics industry, I'm loving the math. I did similar stuff when I was deciding.

I had a spreadsheet that forecasted gas prices 10 years out and the 10 year total cost savings.

For me it wasn't huge as I'm unlikely gonna put more than 5k miles a year, but for those in the pricey gas markets or hitting 100k miles soon, it definitely made sense if your concern was cost.

FuelEconomy.gov's calculator is pretty easy to use. You can choose the Hybrid maverick from the list and it will automatically populate the EB comparison. Then you can edit your gas prices, estimated miles and even your city/hwy percentage to get a pretty fine tuned look at your costs.

Regardless of how much you would save on gas and how many miles it takes for those savings to payback the additional price increase of the hybrid... You must not forget that at least in today's market, the hybrid has a much stronger resale value. I believe that this resale value increase pays back the purchase price increase as soon as you have signed the paperwork at the dealer and were handed the keys.

It looks like most hybrid owners will break even on the new $1,500 premium within 2-3 years. However, keep in mind most of the MY24 hybrids produced will probably be MY23 rollovers, so a new hybrid order may not be fulfilled.

Also, Ford's hybrid battery is only warrantied for 8-years max (10 in Cali). Depending on how long you keep the vehicle, a battery replacement could significantly diminish your fuel savings depending on the life of the original hybrid battery.

Good job but the only calculation I need to know is 2000 lbs vs 4000 lbs. Hybrid won't tow any of my toys.

Well done, gives us an opportunity to work the numbers that are applicable to our situation. Thanks....

For those of us who plan to drive our hybrids 100,000+ miles, it is a no-brainer, especially since we bought 23 models with no markup for hybrids. Reading the OP's formula figures, another reason I am glad to be in TX, especially since I filled up last week at Sam's Club for $2.87 per gallon.

Here is how my calculation comes out based on $3.50 rural IL gas, hybrid 45mpg I achieved over 1yr, and 32mpg Eco assumption based on knowing how I'd drive it & comparable cars I drove.
