Witchcraft, that's the only way to explain how fuel efficient the maverick is. Topped it off recently, it was saying the range was 503 miles. After making 4 drives totaling over 60 miles, it's now showing the range as 532 miles.

Witchcraft, it's the only logical explanation for what's going on here.

Range is based on current MPG, when we visit our daughter in the High Desert - about 4000ft, coming back generally downhill and depending on the wind we are increasing miles to empty for about the first 45 miles. This is on our last three vehicles Mazda 3, CX-3 and EcoSport.

Not necessarily so. I have multiple hybrids and somehow the estimated miles has something to do with the last mpg figure that shows up. I notice that both of our Mavericks, along with our Kia Niro hybrid, will start at a figure, then depending on how you drive, it could go up. For instance, I can start out showing 525 miles remaining, make a 60 mile one way drive to our nearest large town and have it show 545 miles remaining when I arrive. Have done similar a bunch of times.

Calculates on the run, so yes, your miles to empty can increase, but, yeah, amazing.

After a year, it goes pessimistic. And the last 50 miles left on tank goes on for 80.

The MTE is calculated on only the last 100 or so miles of actual driving.

When I first got my maverick it had 8 miles on it and the dealer had filled it and only showed about 350 MTE. But we also drove it about 3 miles on a test drive and with it snowing sat in the truck with it running the whole time producing heat.

Basically the computer can't see into the future. So MTE is only going to match perfectly if nothing changes during your tank of driving. For me, I've gone 6 weeks between fill-ups. Hell, the seasons can change in that time frame.

MTE is recent driving efficiency x 13.8 gallons x % tank level today.

Example City Drive Today:
45 MPG x 13.8 x 80% full = 497 MTE

The next day I drive on the highway at 75 MPH for 100 miles. I got 32 MPG this day. There is a blending formula I'm not certain of but "close" will be:

Average? 39 MPG x 13.8 x 55% full = 296 MTE.

I drove 100 miles, but MTE dropped 201. Why? Because I changed from all city driving to all highway driving.

In EcoBoost the tank constant is 16.5 gallons.

The reverse can happen.

Drive 100 miles at 75 mph getting 32 MPG.

At the end of this trip:
32 MPG x 13.8 Gallons x 75% full = 331 MTE.

Next 100 miles are all city at 45 MPG.
Blended or averaged:
39 MPG x 13.8 Gallons x 55% full = 296 MTE.

Whoa! Magic! You drove 100 miles but only lost 35 MTE! Amazing!!!

Exactly, it fluctuates drastically based on driving conditions and habits. That being said, while the computer can't predict the future as you stated, I've found mine to be very accurate over. It's because our habits don't fluctuate very often, we don't tow, rarely haul, and 95% of our driving is short city stop and go drives of less than 5 miles.

Ideal conditions for maximizing hybrid fuel efficiency to a degree. It's not uncommon at all to drive 20 miles and half of those are more were in electric only mode.

The remaining amount of fuel in the tank prorated to be used at the mpg rate either at the mpg on THIS TRIP or maybe at the rate of the last 10,20,30 miles but probably at this trips rate. That's why you can sometimes go 20, 30, 40 miles after tank gauge reads EMPTY!
