Around here at least, at the few stations that have ethanol free gas, it's way more expensive than regular. Certainly not worth it to squeeze out a couple more mpgs
You are correct of course.

Although I have a chainsaw from the 70's no ethanol in that thing, its a 2 smoke:) Had some older Sea Doo's owners manual said No Ethanol fuel. It's just nice to know if you need it there are stations where its available.

Ive had this truck 4 months. I don't drive a lot and I currently have about 2k miles on the odometer.

AWD, 4k tow running 245 65 17s and 1 inch front level lift. K&N drop in filter, no other mods. 89 octane gas used every time. Standard drive mode. I use it for personal transport and dont haul any heavy loads. Tire PSI set to 35.

I live in NW Indiana and do mixed driving of hwy and streets. I drive normally and I'm not a leadfoot. I don't use remote start or sit in traffic. I am getting absolute horseshit mileage. I have not seen 20mpg. I understand the figure may be off a tad with the slightly different tire size but other people with the same truck and mods are claiming 30mpg. WTF gives already? I bought a small truck to save on gas mileage. My V6 equinox was a gas pig and got better mileage. Its one of the reasons I dumped it. With the the gas $ now going through the moon its starting to bother me. I have the money but I didn't buy a "baby truck" to piss money away on gas. I bought this truck to get a few more mpg than the equinox and I was expecting to get at least 22mpg. I understand going up a size in tires may kill 1-2 mpg but come on now. Enough with this BS already. Im tired of the.excuses. Im seeing 17-18mpg tops. Less than 280 miles per tank. I am always putting gas in this truck. I've reset all settings twice to start from scratch to see if that helped and it has not.

Anybody have any ideas what could be going on? I cant be getting 10-12 less than other members with the same truck. Winter gas blend, altitude, driving style/ BS already. 10-11 mpg less than others is NOT normal. Something is wrong here and I'm getting pissed. The biggest reason people buy small trucks to save on gas.

Was an alignment done after the lift kit was installed? Misaligned tires can cause higher rolling resistance.

When the truck is idling, put a gloved hand in the exhaust gas stream for 15-30 seconds and smell the glove, do you smell raw gas? Perhaps a mix sensor is not operating correctly.

If you switch to ECO mode, does the mileage improve?

Cold weather does affect mileage. Our 2015 Edge was getting around 20MPG during the winter, but now that it is much warmer (Iowa), it is back to 23-25MPG

Take it in to Ford and have them look it over.

You really just want to complain, not understand, right? Seems to be a toxic vent rather than a request for assistance, understanding, but alas.

You lifted the truck
You put in the K&N filter and put on bigger tires
You're comparing your mileage to people who drive differently from you, likely in very different weather. Maybe you're even comparing against hybrid drivers' mileage reports.
You don't tell us how much of a lead foot you are
You claim that this includes a decent amount of highway driving and don't do a lot of idling, yet you average ~22.6 mph.
You talk about remote start but that only matters when you hand-calculate your miles driven between stops to the gas it takes to fill up to the same level (first time preferably the same pump clicks off) against the trip odometer for that tank. Has no bearing on the mpg displayed on the dash.
You don't tell us what your Equinox was rated relative to what you got out of it.
You don't tell us if you're driving this Maverick in the same way. Don't even tell us if you're using Sport mode, for instance, which is much less efficient than Eco or even Normal.

You claim it's "BS" that you're not getting ~30 mpg when your driving at best matches the city profile, where it's rated for 22mpg city, vs. 29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. Factoring in what you did to the poor truck, winter weather and winter blend gas, and your irrational anger that implies you are not remotely gentle with the throttle, 18mpg is entirely reasonable.
Yuuuuuup... He wanted "small truck mileage" but then treated it like a big truck (lift kit, tires, aftermarket this or that). I wonder what kind of mileage an f150 would get with a lowering kit and eco tires. 🤔

Oh yeah for sure, it definitely has it's place. I only use ethanol free in my lawn equipment

As the title of this thread says, “ENOUGH.” Either take it it to your dealer to have them look over things, or sell the truck and buy something that meets your needs.

Infrequent short trips, big wheels, a lift, and AWD aren’t going to result in good fuel efficiency. Then there’s the question of the air filter, which may be an issue at worst, and likely isn’t helping at best. I’m guessing that the truck is fine, but just not capable of delivering the efficiency that you want due to mods and driving routines.

ENOUGH.

Sound like I should be pleased with 16-17 mpg in the F150 / 5.4 L.

Although where I drive I can go miles at 45mph maybe 3 working traffic lights depending on hours of the day.

Your tires are 3% bigger than stock (in circumference and diameter) so you're going 3% farther than you think and getting 1/2 MPG more than you think.

The above really is the answer.

To the OP....
  • Drop in air-filters do absolutely nothing for your vehicle and can actually be detrimental, even K&N filters. You are likely negatively impacting economy with it.
  • Lifting the truck increased the cross section presented to air, increasing drag. Impacting efficiency.
  • Larger and heavier tires greatly impact efficiency. Not only do you now have a lot more un-sprung mass to move, it is rotational mass, kind of the worst combination to add. You also increased the width of the tire, increasing the cross section presented to the air, increasing drag. Decreasing efficiency.
  • Your "normal" driving habits are likely a long ways off from ideal. That's OK, most people are.

Your truck is getting dead on what it should be, if not a little better than expected. You purchased a vehicle for efficiency and then immediately modified it with some of the least efficient modifications you can do. Modification that directly impact efficiency.

To get the rated mileage return it to stock. Drive less aggressively, even if you feel you aren't doing that now.

Our 6.0L Chevy 1500HD gets about 8-10 MPG in town and MAYBE 13 MPG on highway. I have seen it drop to 6 MPG while towing. It makes me want to cry sometimes. $110 to fill it the other day.....

Thankfully it sits most the time and isn't a primary vehicle.

Just hold strong until August, place an order for the hybrid engine, then wait another year for it to arrive and trade in your shitty gas mileage Mav.

Add all the mods to the hybrid that you added to your ecoboost and you'll probably end up around 30 - 33 mpg like you're hoping for!

Good luck!

Maybe calculate at the pump to see if computer is accurate.
Take claims of 30+mpg with a grain of salt. Some on here have said they average 23-26mpg with ecoboost without mods, which is still within epa testing. My mom’s bronco sport badlands with 2.0 averages 22-24mpg consistently. (the sales manager who has the same model claimed he gets 30mpg all the time. She never had seen those numbers in real calculation)
So you are definitely below the posted numbers, but maybe it is just the computer. Have you reset all stats on trip calculator?

(and I’m well aware a million people on here will quote this post and tell me they get 35mpg all the time in their ecoboost. Ram forum guys always over-exaggerated mpg numbers going off computer as well.)
