I recently had a rental that had the dial shifter. It did not take much to get use to it. If I ever get my Maverick, I don't think it will be an issue with me.

This is my commuter car.. So it's nice that it's simple. The shifter is fine... Any manual mode shifting seems worthless to me. The truck would just shift up at redline anyways... And fight you to down shift when you want.
Never been a fan of pretending that somehow manually shifting an auto makes a difference.

I honestly didn't expect to like the dial shifter. It just seemed weird somehow. At best I figured I'd be ambivalent, but surprisingly, I took an immediate liking to it. It's completely out of the way for one thing, and I like the way it feels. You don't have to carefully select each position. Reverse is one click to the right, and when you want "Drive", you just spin it all the way right without worrying where to stop.....it just keeps clicking once you've hit the end. Ditto going left to select "Park". Between that and the electric parking brake, it's all fingertip effortless, and feels very futuristic. I'm 100% sold!
I have to agree... wasn't too sure if I was going to like it at first. My last car had a six speed stick. I do miss rowing thru the gears, however, the dial-a-shift has grown on me. It is simple and well positioned. If it is an automatic there is really no reason it should have a handle that gets in the way.

I can't imagine why a dial would be more susceptible to wear out that a digital shifter. Maybe if it bottomed out each end you could beat it to death by overturning, but since it spins forever you don't even have to worry about that.
Spills, sand or debris getting underneath, etc. I've worked with and repaired a lot of eletronic knobs, switches, and potentiometers over the years and I would never put one facing up like this. The old style physical levers were pretty dang tough, I'm just not sure these electronic dials are going to hold up great over time. I'll be happy if I'm wrong though :)

Personally its is a complete joke to put an electric switch as a gear selector.
Might as well put that control on the steering wheel for it to have some practical use. And to have to look down to see where you just rotated too is a farce for driving safety. Especially in an emergency situation.

And don't get me started on the dead battery issue with these "electrified" cars.
Just accessing the "Manual" neutral engagement mind blowing how these yuppie designers and dingi quality people agree to such nonsense.
At least provide an option to opt out.

No wonder they have no IC's to put in cars they freaking used IC's in just about everything and anything they could think of for the sake of "to electrify" as if there is any logic or efficiency or long term reliability in doing so.

As if I can't physically actuate a function I need some electronics and software to do it for me because some guy in a suit did a survey.

Thats what Im saying. If you are full digital/electronic controls why not put it all on the wheel WHERE YOUR HANDS ARE!!!! I dont care for a dial. I prefer a shift lever, especially the cool old handle type from the 70s.

But if you want to clear up the console which is something that every truck used to have(BRING BACK THE BENCH SEATS). Either put it on a column stalk or just put thumb shift buttons on the wheel.

i would like to ask all, does anyone like the diel shift. i personally do not like it. so I am on a mission to see if there is a way to put a hand held shift like an f150. does anyone agree. thank you
I don't mind the one in my MachE but the good thing about the Maverick is unlike a MachE the hazard button is not right next to the shifter were it can be pushed at random times just fiddling in the cabin.

It isn’t smart like some of the luxury brands’ rotary knobs. They will not allow you to turn past a given menu or selection. So once you get to the farthest right selection (in this case, Drive), the knob will not allow you to turn it further. This is how my Ram was. It allows you to operate the dial without looking after you are used to it.

I expected the Maverick to function the same, but the dial allows you to keep rotating it to the right even after you have reached Drive. So you can’t just rotate it by touch and feel what the transmission is in. I have to look down to ensure I’m in D or R like I want when pulling in and out of spots.
1 click is reverse... 2 neutral... 3-1,000 is drive. then 1 click left is neutral.. 2 park...lol. I could see it maybe being a problem if low was a click option but it is not.

Not really. Modern automatics that can be manually shifted are usually faster than a manual and still allow you to engine brake down hills. But without a doubt manuals are way more fun.
I KNOW a DCT or even regular automatic can shift faster than I can, but it still isn't the same driving experience IMO. Also, there is a pretty good video online that highlights how manual cars have been geared to be slower than their automatic counterparts. I am going to have a hard time giving up my manual 92 Mazda B2200, but such is the price of modern luxury. I really wish the American market got more manual vehicles.

You make a good point about the dial not stopping at the end of its turn. I think it important to note that the gear selection does not proceed any further even though the dial itself spins. In other words, If you spin it to P, it won't continue into D. I like having the tactile feedback ... one less gauge I need to look at.

You absolutely can. You can keep going left or right but it's not like you'll wrap around back to park or drive. Plus the feedback it does when you shift works absolutely fine for precise control, or just send it and rotate it like crazy to go into drive and park and then do a small turn for reverse and neutral.

Lol, ok.

Who cares? It's an automatic.

I usually do the following.

1- Start truck
2- Rotate dial to D(rive)
3- Drive

How delicate must one's mind be to let this affect them?

You drive with your hand on the shifter... in an automatic. Okey doke.

Why?

Call me an innovator I just like things the way I like. not that you are wrong you are 100% in the wright, but just looking at it bothers me. I'm so used to having my hand on the shifter.

You probably hated syncromesh. And power steering? :)

despite current popular culture and thinking, not ALL "innovation" or "progress" is good- or necessary.
