The manual tells us the truck will tell us when it needs an oil change or every 10,000 miles. Being someone that used to change his own oil on older cars, I was always used to changing oil every 3,000 miles. I bought a brand new Fusion in 2012 and changed every 5,000 miles since it uses synthetic oil. The dealership says I should change the oil on the Maverick every 5,000 miles. I tend to agree with them, does anyone else have thoughts on this?

Hybrids are complex.

No human. And especially no dealer can predict when the oil needs changing better than the on-board built-in computer.

Dozens, maybe hundreds of people have had their dirty used oil analyzed at labs and the oil life reminder is consistently conservative. Even if it reminds you to change oil at 11,000 miles, your oil will still be in good shape. Countless data proves this. Anything else is superstition or myth.

Tons of threads to show you the OLM is paying attention.
It'll go longer when driving allows - it'll go shorter when driving requires it.
Even the EB!

Just FYI - the OLM seems to be allowing 5-6k on the ICE for the oil change time, unless you tow or idle a lot - then shorter.

You have a 26MY anyway - hopefully you've noticed you merely have to subtract some trip figures to discover how many engine miles you have.

So there's your likely around 5k oil change on the engine.

Now - if you need 5k oil change on your tires - that's a different matter.

I’ve got a 25 Hybrid and I change mine every 5k.

Filter and Mobil1 full synthetic cost around $33 for me.

So if I change my oil 10x extra times over 100k I have cost myself $330 while ensuring I’ve kept my engine running on clean oil.

I’ve spent $330 on dumb shit plenty in my life. So I’ll take that dive.

Also gives me a chance to inspect everything every 5k. Paint some rust underneath, rotate tires. Every 15k change the PTU and RDU fluids.

There's always a few "more is better" in any crowd....

Does no harm to the truck they say, except it's double the chances to make a mistake, make a mess, strip the threads, etc.

Frequent oil changes are cheap "insurance," especially if you DIY. +/-$35 plus a half hour of your time. Plus, as I recently told the 11 year old kid next door, what else can you do and get dirty, and your mom won't get mad at you.

The 2023 printed owner's manual in the glove box says that 10,000 miles is the MAXIMUM interval for an oil change UNLESS the vehicle is driven in conditions considered SEVERE USE. In severe use it says the interval should be a maximum of 5,000 miles. It then lists a number of conditions that would be considered just that.

Our oil changes are every 5,000 miles, and we don't rely on some engineers so-called oil condition sensor and clock to tell when to change the oil. An ounce of prevention.

To back this up, the specific driving conditions that trigger Ford's severe use classification include:

Towing & Hauling:

Frequently towing a trailer, carrying heavy payloads, or using a camper.

Stop-and-Go Driving:

Extensive idling or low-speed driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic (which is especially common with the Maverick Hybrid's stop-start engine cycles).

Extreme Climates:

Regularly driving in extremely hot weather (over 90°F) or freezing sub-zero temperatures.

Harsh Environments:

Driving frequently in dusty, muddy, or off-road conditions (which requires more frequent engine air filter replacements).

Short Trips:

Consistently driving short distances (under 5 miles) where the engine does not have the chance to fully reach its optimal operating temperature.

Mountainous Terrain:

Frequently driving in hilly or mountainous areas, which causes extra strain on your transmission and braking systems.

It more about the filter then the oil. Use Wix or Baldwin 7500-10000. Anything else….. Best of luck. The filter material in cheap filters breaks down or the backflow spring fails and that is as they say “is a wrap”

I may have asked you this already but have you changed your transmission fluid yet and if so do you DIY it? I only have 10K on the AWD Hybrid Maverick but I'm thinking about doing the PTU, RDU and Transmission on our 23 AWD Escape Hybrid to save some coin.

I have not done the transmission yet and it is going to be the one thing I pass off to my local trusted mechanic mostly because it is supposed to be level and even though I'm sure my Mav is when I'm doing the PTU and RDU - I'd rather just be extra cautious.

I am sitting right over 18,000 miles. I did my PTU and RDU at 5k. I plan to do them again at my 20k oil change and that is when I'm going to have the eCVT drain and fill done.

There have been quite a few posts here that demonstrate that the OLM is very conservative with its recommendation and that severe service DOES trigger early change notification by the OLM. People have sent oil to the lab for testing and it comes back in great condition. I think Ford's OLM has earned some grace from us.
