Ok, fine. But is there an 8-point set yet?! They need to git to werk on THAT.
I already have spline bits.

Haven't checked octoplex yet but have seen tripple-square (12 point). WAIT that's what you are calling spline bits!😂
Aaarrrggghhh!!! The square point sets have 90° corners that fit all the way to the points for better torque, etc (single square = 4 corner, double square = 8 corner, triple square = 12 corner, quadruple square = 16 corner). That's why a 12 point socket rolls the corners off a hex head bolt and a triple square socket will not! 🤫

Mfrs: "Sure, you have a 'right to repair', and we have the right to build vehicles that require absurdly overpriced "special tools"..."

The MB Sprinter van (and maybe several others) are sold with the trans dipstick tube sealed with a security cap (must break to remove). Want to check the ATF level? Oh-too-bad, that requires a "special tool". They seriously call it that, when it's a *$100* dipstick! I bought one off eBay for about $20. That's an example of what auto mfrs are doing.
Does one have to pay to check the oil also? Wait, how about air pressure caps at $50 each each time you check air pressure!!!

Soooo, hammer a robertson into them?

Guilty secret, when torx were uncommon 30+ yrs back and it was most just the T10 or T15 you found in electronics, and not realllll tight, I used to jam the end of a triangular file into them.

I forgot about those JIS Screwdrivers.
I bought a set when I had my Toyota Yaris.

There is also a Phillips posi driver head which is similar to the JIS except it is a bit more flared where the slope to the end starts. It keeps the head of the screwdriver better seated. I have some but I don't have access to them today.

John,
All the exterior bolts except the one that I'm pointing to in the engine compartment, are Torx Plus. The one in the engine compartment is a Torx security bolt.

All I’m gonna say is “Why so damn many”? 3 torx, 5 screwdriver heads, imperial, standard, metric, etc etc etc! It never stops! WTF happened to “one size fits all”? 🤔😉

I've heard that some mfrs are doing away with the dipstick and relying solely on an oil level monitor (OLM).

Our 2009 Sprinter has both, but I consider the OLM a backup.

With the new "subscription" model for options, I wouldn't be surprised if the OLM was included in a "package", along with a heated steering wheel -- for a monthly fee.

Things are getting ridiculous.

Problem (for tool mfrs): Tools last a long time, often decades, and many have a lifetime warranty.

Solution: Create new tools and hardware. Cha-ching!

I have a socket with about 500 pins which will individually depress and fit damn near anything. I just looked for it, cannot find it, think someone borrowed it..... Dang it!!!!

Not necessarily. I have a Ryobi BT3000 table saw that is 25 years old. I needed to replace the blade. It came with special made wrenches for the task because you can't get a standard open end wrench in to hold the shaft of the motor or to loosen the nut with out major disassembly. I moved 2 years ago and have a new workshop. I looked in every cabinet, drawer, toolbox, checked every pegboard hook in the workshop and the garage. Could not find those wrenches. So I gave up and decided to check Ebay for a set. As I was turning out the lights on my way out I dropped my bottle of water. I bent down to pick it up and saw the wrenches taped to the side of the saw housing, under the table, with packing tape. I apparently taped them there so they would not get lost in the move, 😂 .

I hope they invent another different bolt head soon so I can buy yet another set of bits. Maybe with 7 tips instead of the 6 on Torx and Torx+. That way you couldn't use either, and would have to buy new bits.
They have. It's called Torx Plus Tamper Resistant. Five lobes with a pin in the middle.

That was a great idea, taping them there. Unless you're old and forget 🙄🙄🙄
