I can’t stand oil change threads. They are all pretty much exactly the same. Yet I read every one of them like I’m going to learn something new. What’s wrong with me?
Do you let off the gas as you go past a car accident?

Ya that.

Or slow down as you go past a dumpster fire - wondering how that happened?
And why are they throwing oil on it!
Oh, that's all the extra cheap oil bought so an engine outlasts the frame rust, or so the insurance company gets more out of the vehicle after it's totaled in a crash eventually, or enough electrical problems happen to make it very not worthwhile to repair.

I would apply oil to the steel frame under my Maverick if I lived in the Rust Belt. 5W-30 works best IMO.

Just change it at 5k miles or less; oil is cheap, engines are expensive. It is false economy to try and stretch it out farther. Keep receipts for oil & filter if you DIY.
There is no magic number for all. It depends on the type of oil you are using, and how/where you drive. I've seen analysis reports come back with viscosity out of grade in less than 3k miles, and others still good after 10k.

Well shoot - I discovered some old ATF bottles lately, likely meant as power steering fluid for some vehicle - I was hoping to use for that.
I'm sure some leftover 10W-40 will be too thick for the nooks and crannies ... especially when it gets cold out ...

Good points. Some of our colder northern neighbors might prefer 0W? Might flow out of a spray better. Coat a metal snow shovel as a lubricant? Motor Oil is a such a multi purpose wondrous liquid!

Imagine if doctors cared for patients in a manner similar to the way some people determine what they believe is the appropriate oil change interval. No blood tests, EKGs, or MRIs -- just poke around, look at the person's eyes, maybe check their reflexes, and wing it:

"As a medical professional, my finely honed 6th sense tells me you need to take 40 mg of Atorvastatin daily. Do not question my diagnosis -- just take the pills, whether you need to or not! They're 'good insurance'!"

I just did that 😄

Got a Krown underbody spray done as they use ALL the salt here and it's wet and cold and then warm and wet and it's all salty moisture and just absolutely eats steel up. I've seen some reports that the oil based sprays can cause rubber to swell, we'll see what happens. Better to replace a door seal or rubber boot then a frame member.

and if 2 Tylenol makes you feel better, why not double it? Tylenol is cheap!

Or just wipe your oil on a paper towel like me:)

Same oil 600 severe miles later and OLM @61%. Clean but smells of gas…

Both fine, but I’d hate to see the skid marks of a 10,000 mile wipe 😳

I might get a Kaiser bill for the co-pay just reading this.

The blackstone used oil test posted on this forum for the 2.5L were enough to change my mind on the oil change interval, although I am still only going to do 10K using an extended life oil with what appears to be the highest quality filter (PG241EX), and do a blackstone test myself after the first one of those.

I don't blame people for having questions or playing it safe though when there have been so many problems with the extended drain intervals manufacturers have pushed combined with efficiency changes (turbos, lighter oils, tighter tolerances, and more) that have led to some spectacular, and expensive problems for owners.

Oil Myth: Oil Color Indicates When it’s Time for an Oil Change

It’s common to assume that black motor oil has worn out or become too saturated with contaminants to protect your engine and requires changing. Not necessarily. As we saw, discoloration is a natural byproduct of heat and soot particles, which are too small to wear out your engine.

Oil darkness is not an indication of the condition of the oil itself. The detergents and dispersants in the oil are what causes it to darken as it is doing its job in cleaning the engine and carrying particulates to the oil filter.

The only surefire way to determine if the oil has reached the end of its service life is to perform oil analysis. Chemically analyzing an oil sample reveals the condition of the oil, the presence of contaminants, fuel dilution and so on. Several companies offer oil analysis services, including Oil Analyzers INC.

Absent oil analysis, it’s best to follow the oil-change recommendation given in your vehicle owner’s manual or by the motor oil manufacturer. The recommended service intervals for AMSOIL products, for example, are based on thousands of data points spanning years of use.

It’s best to trust the data, not your eye, in this case. Otherwise, changing the oil could amount to throwing away good oil."

How did you appy the oil on the frame?

1. Spray?
2. Splash?
3. Brush?
4. Wipe?
5. Other

lol
