The 5 year old Nissan Frontier I sold when I ordered the Mav was atrocious .
16 mpg around town , 23 Hiway .
Bone stock , 4 cylinder ...
And I'm old , and drive easy ...

My 3+ year average with the Mav is 39 mpg. .

I don't think the OP should base his mileage on only 1200 miles of driving .

I kind of figured, the way he was driving, was probably the reason his mileage was not what he was expecting. The first line in his second paragraph was kind of contradictory, 'I do not use the Economy mode because the vehicle is pretty slow already. And I am not pounding the pedal constantly to race it around.'
Which would equate to less MPG than what he's getting now.

Was this a drive-by one and done?😲

Weight definitely affects it. I noticed a difference with my kids and wife in the car versus just me.
On the plus side, you now have a well documented reason to insist that your wife needs to lose weight... 😉

....maybe because his mileage was so bad he ran out of gas on his return trip?

I always measure my milage every time I refill my gas tank. Since I replaced the OG Michelins with the Falken Wildpeak AT3W, my milage dropped like crazy. With the OG Michelins I was getting up to 40MPG. Now, with the Falkens, I've only gotten 1 tank of 37MPG. All other tanks give me 32-33 MPG. I do have an ARE MidRiser Topper, but the milage drop that the tires make is wild, specially because I hardly ever take a dirt road. I live in Los Angeles so absolutely no dirt roads. My commute is only 4 miles each way in city. I only drive maximum of 2 days on the freeway.

I think it’s more me than the rest of the family. I’m all their weights combined.

Have always put a shell on my trucks.
Shell alone never decreased my mpg.
Even the high topper versions
(Above cab high like yours)

Yes increase on heavier tire's.

There is a math measurement something like adding 10 lb extra tire weight of heavier tire each is equivalent to 100 pounds in the vehicle.
(×4=400lb.) which can also wear down things like wheel bearings and cv earlier over use & time.> because it's directly added pounds per Revolution on Direct parts.

Anyone claiming to get 37+ mpg on a highway trip needs to post their results over the hundreds of miles.
Well shoot. I must have gotten one of the better trucks. If there's a few lemons, there must be a few cherries too.

Today, Holiday Light traffic. Hit mostly green lights getting to the freeway. Just three red light stops totaling about 3 minutes of zero MPH. I drove uncharacteristically fast just for you to see what would happen.

And the smoother drive; fewer stops, keeping momentum up canceled out the higher speed on the highway. I don't know how else to explain it.

If you take the 3 minutes of idle off it's about a 57 MPH average.

This here ⬆
Drive it like your foot hurts IF you apply your foot on the gas pedal.

I get the reason.

BUT WOW im not changing my driving to do that!

AND I CAN IMAGINE manufacturers creating
a vehicle that wont let the driver apply their foot to the pedal.
Once rolling, You get 30% juice and thats it.
Hope for down hill slopes and wind at your back.

The mpg race is fun ain't it ?! 😁
I don't mind it, I get a kick out of squeezing the last drop of efficiency out of it. High preforming doesn't just mean more hp.

Matters little, several of us had fun with this thread.

In my Highschool dayz I delivered auto parts after school. Driving an Ranger pick up.
Four cylinder, Automatic, A/C. Hey it was central Florida. Didn't even have a drivers license. Just a learners permit. Hell, I was only fifteen. And addicted to driving.
At 17 I paid a trucker $250 and bought his fuel to spend a half a day teaching me the Eaton Fuller Road ranger 15 Transmission. Basically a 5 speed with a three speed rear end. Learning that Transmission Altered the course of my life.

I stopped and dropped at a peculiar shop. No customers, just two old dudes watching TV with a beer In one hand and the other on a piston, or a rod, other end of that in a vice.
I dropped at 10 AM and again at 3 PM. The same two old dudes were still doing the same thing.
I noticed two crates, Huge nasty rusted engine blocks. Saw two cranks on a table.

I asked, they were breaking in crank, piston and rode bearing by HAND !

The old guy I spoke to said, one connecting bearing, or crank bearing might take all day to smooth out before installation. He said we can feel it if something is wrong.

He said up there on Mr. Booths property there are six engine blocks all rusting in the sugar sand.
They were, 'Curing' the blocks after they had been roasted for days over extreme heat.

This was the old way, This was how you built a stock car engine that would not only win but last a whole season.

This way will not be seen again, ever.

Cool Huh ?

When the Boomers and the rest of Generation X die out the rest of you younguns are totaly focked !

I’m running 235/65R17 AT4/W now, instead of my stock Pirelli Scorpion 225/65R17. The difference between the tire weight is like 8-10lb each tire. Pretty significant. The acceleration and fuel economy suffered, but traction in all media increased significantly. In Louisiana, as a hunter wet and mud traction is pretty crucial when going in remote land. Even on the road, I notice I can make turns that I wasn’t able to before and avoid road obstacles easier. For the price of roughly 10-15% fuel economy, I’d say it’s worthwhile.

True, my traction is waaaaay better. Even in the rain. I do like the Falkens, I'll most likely get the AT4s when the time comes. Or maybe the Cross Climates.

We recently hit 15,000 miles since March! Getting into EV mode is like gently threading the needle but its very short lived since its only a 1.1 kWh battery. The most we've gotten up to is 39.1 MPG and we are driving in Normal mode and do use seat and wheel heat more than HVAC. I'd love specifics for getting to more....heck above 45 MPG would be amazing so if you have some very specific tips please do share. Thanks!!!
I drove around town with no jack rabbit starts in eco mode
I am getting around 43
