STOP Following OEM Oil Advice (GM Recall Proves Why)

With the hybrid 2.5, it seems to run cooler, and probably less load, a thinner oil is probably beneficial. He also states the lower viscosity oil has a greater affect on MPG in city driving, which is less of a concern in a hybrid. Towards the end of the video he does say going up in viscosity does not always provide better protection.

Has anyone changed to a higher viscosity and had the oil tested?

Trying to justify thicker oil because GM can't design an engine correctly is just bad science. Its yet another reason why I won't drive a GM product today. Fords and every other manufacturer do not have this issue, so no, don't do it unless you want to blow up your engine.

Well said.
Op, the oil journals are designed for a specific viscosity.
Change you oil spec if you like.
Thats another reason I won’t buy used.

I get people are suspicious of manufacturers but I read so many articles that suggest ignoring the manufacturers recommendations. it's like, don't use this oil you should use this kind, change your transmission fluid at 20,000 rather than 100,000, change your oil every 3,000 mi rather than 5 or 10. Every vehicle I've owned I've done the manufacturers recommendations and I had one gasket or something like that on a transmission go which was fixed under warranty. But other than that issue I've had no engine nor transmission issues.

I'm just in a grumpy mood so just ignore me.

It's my understanding the 2.5 used to spec 5w30. FWIW. Probably isn't detrimental at all to it but there is also lots of data on BITOG with people running 0w20 in it with very good analysis results.

STOP watching click-bait videos on the internet.

I won't give that person any clicks/views, so I don't know who "he" is, but I'm 100% certain that "he" did not design your vehicle, and does not warranty it.

Everything you hear, read, or watch should be taken with a grain of salt. I am no means condoning changing to a higher viscosity, but he did have some good points of discussion. Which I mistakenly thought we could have on this forum.

It is fact that a lower viscosity oil will provide better fuel economy, but at what cost? Does it mean a motor will last only 150K miles instead of 300K?

I also believe, OEMs do not have the best interest of the consumer in mind. They have regulations, stake holders, profits, ease of manufacturing/assembly, and who knows what else to take into account.

If the cars last a million miles do you think they will sell more cars? No, cars need to die for people to buy more. I believe there is a designed lifespan for a vehicle. GM supports their cars for 10 years, after that parts may not be available. And being in the mid-west, usually they are severely rusted by then anyway.

Do what you want with your truck. Believe who you want. Take whatever risks you feel make sense. Ignore the experts, trust other experts. Follow logic, or get funky.

The world is weird. Make of it what you will. Accept the fruit of the seeds you plant.

Never mind my engine, I have always felt better after an oil change... :geek: But this guy is really entertaining(and knowledgeable, imho) ....where motor oil is concerned... it's more interesting than you think! https://www.youtube.com/@themotoroilgeek
