The enginebay on My first Ranger (MY1985) after the Thunderbird 2.3L turbo motor was installed...
Engine came with an "intercooler"..
Went from the stock (2.0L) 98hp to (2.3L turbo) 190hp...

Nice sweet setup Jerry. I once followed on a forum a member who did a 302 swap with a 6 speed Tremec among lots of other mods on a 96 Ranger Splash. Sweet build.

There are lots of us that will love the old Rangers till the day they put us in the ground.

I CAN NOT take full credit for this, as I DID have help... I was personal friends with the Parts Guy and Head Mechanic at Swister Ford (long since, gone.. 😢). They were Wizards at doing this stuff... In the day... 😎

When I got my Maverick, I had at most 6" of clearance on each side of the garage door. Had to spend $6K to increase the width of my door.
My maverick fits fine width-wise, but length-wise it barely fits in my garage.

Got a buddy that bought a new Lariat Ranger 2 years ago.
He’s in the process of getting a Ecoboost Maverick Lariat. He needs the Horsepower and the 4k tow pkg.

His reasons,
Ranger averages 19 mpg up here,
Ranger body roll annoys him,
Cramped cabin feel,
He sat in my Mav and I sat in his Ranger,
Cramped cabin feel, yep.

He often pulls a 1900 pound trailer and load and we both agreed he should get the 4k for the slightly lower final drive and the intercooler.
It would be wise up here in our Appalachian mountains.

I think if I was planning on regularly towing anything (regardless of weight), the 4k tow package is a no-brainer. That extra coolant will only be a boon for longevity of the drivetrain when putting any amount of strain on it by towing.

I still maintain the Maverick is the true successor to the Ranger when it comes to vehicle size! Should've called the Maverick the Ranger, and the current Ranger the F-100.

I've had two older Rangers like that, man they are bulletproof! Still kind of wish I had my '96!
I agree 100%. And my dealer says that's what a lot of Maverick customers tell them. Most see the Maverick as the true new Ranger.

It's crazy how the new Rangers feel very cramped inside. While I was picking my 25 up they had a 25 Ranger Lariat I asked to sit in. I got in, adjusted everything and I was like are you kidding me... I felt squeezed.

The day I picked up my Maverick, the dealer had a Ranger in the showroom with a Maverick nearby. The Ranger looked massive next to the Maverick. It was surprising. Then, on my way out, someone had parked an F-350 dually next to my Maverick. I laughed out loud.....

I agree, they mis-named the current Ranger. The reissue should have been the F-100, while the Maverick (because that name has previous car history) should also have stayed with the F-series, like F-10 or F-50 or some lower F-number. Makes more sense to my peabrain.

My pair:

The Maverick is a little lower, nearly the same length, but about 6" wider.

Just this morning I stumbled on an interesting little video that summarized two things I already knew about small trucks. First the chicken tax stopped competition. Second the CAFE rules perversely dis-incentivized small trucks.

Loving the size of this truck compared to the one I came from. Couldn’t bring myself to get rid of the Ranger, 216k and core still going strong but the niceties of a newer truck are very refreshing.

I do miss my buttons and physical controls, but it’s not hard to get used to the touchscreen

🤓 You know they all seem to get bigger over the years. I had an 2007 Ranger that was bigger then your, Ranger
