Why do people complain about others spending 40k on a maverick?

Bought my loaded '22 XLT used with 36k miles for 29.5k. I was very specific in what I wanted (XLT, 4k tow, Fx4, CP360, Lux Package) and there were some niceties thrown in (sliding rear window, sunroof, lift+Wheels+Tires, Tonneau Cover). I figure that I couldn't find another vehicle for the price, with those features, that MPG (25ish HWY), that was also the multitool that the Maverick is. Will it last forever? Probably not, as it's a Ford product (I come from Toyotas, Hondas, Mazdas). It doesn't change the fact that this is a compelling product that does everything I need it to, and more.

This is the reason the Maverick has gone up so much so quickly. When the 22's came out, Ford couldn't build them fast enough ( I know because I waited 18 months for mine). People were willing to pay $5-15k over MSRP for these things. Of course Ford is going to raise the prices because they want a piece of the pie. You bought a USED XLT with 36k miles for almost what it cost new and you were not alone.

Now, the equivalent truck is brushing 40K, which made mine feel like a deal.

I get it, 40k is a lot of money, the interior is from a $20,000 vehicle, and the lariat is just putting lipstick on a pig etc. etc.

but I'm going to list things I need in a vehicle, and try to come up with something for me.
-has a bed for dirt/mulch etc so it doesn't get in the cab. (my wife likes to garden and we have a decently big property to do work on)
-gets good gas mileage because my wife and I live outside the city and commute about 60 miles to work one way
-has a good ride quality/decent handling. I've daily driven sports cars my whole life so I have some expectation that it doesn't drive like complete crap like a "real" truck.
-leather/pleather seats for ease of cleaning. we have a dog and scrubbing mud out of cloth seats sucks ass.
-has 4-5k towing capabilities for a trailer to do home renos/dump runs etc.
-is less than $50k.
-AWD for winter driving
-is small enough to park in the city easily, good turning radius etc.

Literally, the ONLY vehicle that currently exists which fits that arbitrary list of criteria is the 2025 maverick lariat hybrid/awd. The xlt doesn't come with pleather seats, 2024 models don't come awd and hybrid, any crossover/suv isn't going to have a seperate area for dirt so it's going to end up all over the cabin. Any "real" truck is going to be too big, too fuel hungry and crap to drive.

Everyone talks like getting a ranger is some huge upgrade for a few grand more. It's a completely different class of vehicle. It's like asking why someone bought a miata when they could have bought a duramax because you can't haul 20 sheets of plywood in a miata. Like maybe the "more capable" vehicle is actually worse in the ways that matter to that person, and much more inconvenient in other ways? Anyways I'm just tired of hearing about this and wanted to get your guys thoughts.
My Lariat was close to 40K, it replaced an XL I had. I love the upgraded features (to get these awesome features in any other truck it would be much much more expensive and way out of my budget). Bottom line is don't worry about what others are saying, if you can afford it, you like it then that is all that matters. Enjoy your Lariat just like I am loving mine and have no regrets at all getting it.

People say that for the price of a Lariat one could go up to a Ranger, and looking at prices, that may be true. But a Ranger is a physically much larger truck than the Maverick, and I want to fit my truck in my garage with room to spare, which is something that a continually growing Ranger can't do, but a Maverick still can. I needed something that wasn't any bigger than my '13 Frontier king cab, and there wasn't anything else out there in the pickup realm that would fit the size criteria I was needing the vehicle to meet. Also, comparing apples to apples for driving features, getting a Ranger with a comparable feature set to a Maverick Lariat would push it way more expensive than what the Mav is priced at.

Because people want to complain or pass judgment. To be clear, I have almost always driven a truck since I got my DL 45 years ago. My present vehicle is a 2019 Niro Hybrid EX Premium with over 176k kms on it. Yes, I am in Canada. I have ordered a '25 Lariat Hybrid AWD 4k tow BAP etc. It will be $52k. If I was to replace my Niro with a '25 Niro in the same trim package and options, it's $49k. I'm looking forward to my Maverick and to return to a truck as my daily driver. If someone finds $52k too expensive for them, fine. I'm not asking you to buy it for me.

Yep, but then the XL/XLT people come on the forums asking how they can add the Lariat features after the fact and find that they can't or the ones they can are even more expensive than getting the Lariat to begin with.
How true! Right on point!

We just got a 2024 Lariat AWD + 4k tow package. It was $49k CAD MSRP but the dealer here gave us $10k trade in value on our 15 year old Honda Ridgeline so $39k and about $43k out the door, we did add all the accessories we wanted and 10yr/100k extended warranty. All in it was close to $50k CAD.

If you look at what else is on the market, there is nothing like it. My wife wanted something super easy to drive with modern creature comforts that was easy to park and had leather interior and AWD for the winters up here. I wanted something we could slap a good set of all weathers on year-round, got solid MPG (about 2-3 times better than the ridgeline) and could still tow a camper/trailer.

Most "real" trucks are routinely selling for $100k these days and do not fit our use case or preferences at all. I hate body on frame and traditional 4x4 - it's inherently an unsafe and antiquated combo. If you need one for work or towing a giant boat, great, if not, they roll, they're squirrely as hell with no weight in the back and they have terrible crash incompatibility making it less safe for others on the road.

In general, we run into two camps on this topic:
1. "Real" truck people - we're used to that coming from a ridgeline though
and
2. People who would never buy domestic, especially a Ford (which used to be us) and probably why we sprung for the 10yr extended warranty.

Until Japanese manufacturers start making small trucks here again or we catch the Ute bug that New Zealand and Australia have, the Maverick is the only good new small truck in Canada/USA.

I don't know about complaining but depending on the Maverick you purchased (XL, XLT, Lariat) and the added options, I could see people question the logic. But then again, I see people over pay for things there is no ay they can afford all the time, just because the "want it".

When I purchased mine, the dealerships were doing a MINIMUM of a $10,000 price markup and people were paying it... I don't think that was a wise choice but each to their own. After having the Maverick for a year (this month), I can tell you it is a great truck but NOT worth another $10,000. I purchased mine from someone that ordered it and waited so long to get it, they bought something else, I paid his original price and it had 50 miles and was less than 2 weeks old.

I laughed becasue I am the second camp. Still not sure if I made the right choice and I will bail in a second if we get a solid competitor. Having a Ford has made me nervous so far. You can just tell the build quality is lacking.

Good example. I felt like my steering wheel was not lined up. I went ta a flat spot and busted out the level. Turns out all the dash panels are a little off and it made the wheel look crooked. For me so far I waish I would have spent $10k more, but I do love the MPG so far. I have the feeling the Mav is going to be a loss for me in the end and my last Ford.

My dealership experience has been abysmal so far which is making me really ponder just getting out now. What good is a 10 year warranty if a bunch of smucks are fixing your car. As for the $40k complaint, I jusy feel like there are better vehicles out there for that kind of money. The truck feels like a $20k vehicle and everything else is lipstick on a pig.

One of my co-workers who has a big V8 Silverado called mine a "baby truck" to which I answered, "Yeah, but we're both hauling air 99% of the time and my hybrid gets three times the gas mileage yours does". Shut him right up. Lol

"Why do people complain about others spending 40k on a maverick?"

Better question, why do people feel the need to complain about people who complain about stuff? And yes I see the hypocrisy of saying this, since I'm now complaining about the OP complaining about other people complaining. :ROFLMAO:

My over simplified example.
I'm sure some people see it like buying a $200 suit from JCPenney.
Taking the suit to a tailor. Having them do alterations and embellishments of over $200.
In the end the underpinnings are still a $200 suit from JCPenney

Just a thought. 😁

Years ago I bought a new standard cab S10 short bed. An old guy I worked with called it a "sidewalk truck" as in something kids would play with on the sidewalk. Yeah, right. Some numbskulls just don't get it.
