They limit the top speed to protect the components from damage. The trans for instance isn't rated for the hp the 2.0 puts out and they just limited the power so it doesn't grenade.
Well they could have at least put the limiter the same as the Escape if that was the case (126 mph). I'm guessing that the Maverick may have different gearing than the Escape so if the limiter was the same cutoff, the Mavericks engines RPM's would be too high.

Excessive rpm's is a separate PCM parameter for fuel cut, independent of vehicle speed.

As stated previously, top speed fuel cut is largely a component of the OEM tire application speed rating. High speed handing dynamics also factors in, especially with a truck (aerodynamics), and especially again with a truck capable of carrying significant cargo weight/towing capacity. This is all engineered into the vehicle, and limit tested extensively by every OEM, for every vehicle they build.

A 1986 Mustang LX 5.0L was slightly quicker than the Mustang GT, probably because it weighed a bit less without the ground effects and spoilers. The 1986 Mustang LX 5.0L would do a 0-60 mph in 6.2 secs according to Car and Driver magazine. The GT did it in about 6.5 secs. It wasn't until 1985 that the Mustangs and Camaros got a boost in power. The pre-85's were slower 0-60 than the Maverick Ecoboost. The Hybrid Maverick would have given them a run.

As far as the speedometer going higher than actual, the car manufacturers probably do that so that they can use it in other cars they make that DO have a higher top speed. The Escape 2.0L ecoboost for example goes up to 126 mph I believe.
I had an 83 Capri RS 5.0 (bought new), that had an 85 MPH speedo with several un-numbered slashes afterwards. If I remember correctly they amounted to about 120-140 mph.
Car had a 5 speed overdrive and would bury the speedo (bypass the slashes) in 4th gear. It walked off from my good friends 66 Falcon Futura, 6-8 car lengths! The Falcon was his bracket car and ran 15.0's at Alamo Dragway, surprised both us.

I am certain it could be. I’m thinking with one of the tunes that are being offered now.

Perhaps @Buschur can chime in.

He’s a longtime Ecoboost modifier that offers bolt on mods for the MAV. I don’t think he does the engine tunes, but would definitely know.
Yes, the speed limiter can be moved to anywhere you'd like it, stock it is set at 109 mph if I remember correctly in the program.

108 mph is nothing, kind of sad really that anyone would even talk about "windin' her out"... to one-oh-eight. 😴

If want to experience speed, get a sportbike, take it to 170 on the interstate. That'll wake you up.
Been there done that, only on a 2 lane back road, (ZX11) never needed to experience that a second time.

After watching that video more than a dozen times, I am convinced the driver had to be going slightly downhill, the times are just a little too quick for a hybrid version, especially in the 70-100 range.

Never seen a car that didn't have a speedo that went to less than 120 ;)
Back in the 80’s they were all limited to 85 MPH. I guess they figured that people wouldn’t try to top out their cars if they couldn’t brag about that their actual top speed. There was some logic to it but it wouldn’t work nowadays with smart phones and you all the other devices we have that can measure speed with GPS.

"Pegging it" term from old style speedo's that had a peg to keep the physical pointer from going past a certain point which when the peg was hit it might break off pointer or otherwise harm the speedo. 😂

95 F250. Only goes to 85 but I don't think it will do 70 downhill with a tailwind! It will pull great in 1st and 2nd but then the power dies off.

I have not tried to max out the Maverick, I expected it to be governed around the 110 point given the type of vehicle it is.

However, I can tell you that a Nissan Titan is governed at the same speed and that a 2012 base-model Hyundai Accent will do a solid buck-twenty-five in 6th. I know because a road raging moron in a Titan with AK-47 stickers on every piece of glass decided to push me on the interstate to 110 solely because I guess a certain part of his anatomy felt small, shriveled, and flaccid when a little blue hatchback passed him going 80 (I didn’t even get in front of him!).

Legitimately thought he was going to rear-end me as I dropped into third (thank heavens for stick shifts) and took it all the way to 125 and kept it there until his governor kicked in. Continued until I ran up on a couple of cars and immediately slowed down and juked in between them in the rightmost lane.

I’ve never done 125 since.

I'll admit, in my first 2k miles I went 92 without realizing it, fast enough for me :). Fastest I ever went was 102 in my old 2012 CRV. She was screaming at that speed lol

I think it was some kind of US government regulation they were trying for fuel mileage or some such. They were trying to get Americans to drive at 55 mph to save fuel. Many of those 85 mph speedometers on American cars had the 55 mark in bold numbers. It only lasted a few years or so.

Of note: 1986 was the first year that the third brake light became a government requirement on US spec cars.

Would be neat to see someone modify a Maverick for the track and see what it can do.

Took my modified Miata to 135 back when I had my rotrex on it. That's all the gearing it had in it at 7k rpm. Only reason I did was due to a group of people in a couple cars were trying to run me off the road and yelling at me to pull over. Didn't feel like sticking around to find out why.
