I agree...I checked the numbers for his zip code on Kelly's Blue Book...
plus the market value for the 19-23 ranger is definitely dropping, since the '24 ranger has significant improvements. in fact, the 19-23 ranger had been sold since 2011 in Australia and other international markets, so in many ways it was a much older tech vehicle than other 2019 model Fords.

My FX/4 has been trouble free, rattle and noise free. Recalls don't mean shit to me. Getting things fixed for free on Ford's dime is OK with me. Our old 2012 Sonata had 11 recalls in 8 years and ran like a top just like my Maverick is doing.

Rangers are nice trucks too but they ride like a lumber wagon compared to the Maverick.

As for easily totaled, do not single out the Maverick in this area. Astronomical repair costs and vehicle rental costs have risen way above inflation since the Scamdemic.

Not to mention, how easily these trucks seem to get totalled from what should have been minor accidents.
Sound like you haven't owned a new vehicle recently.
They are all design to destroy themselves to protect you.
Combine that with a low MSRP and of course it's easy to total, but it's not specifically a Maverick issue.

I feel for the op being concerned and wish him well on his ranger. Right now I only have 3700 miles on my Maverick but I love it more than any car I have owned. It might be because it's the first one with remote start, first one with heated steering wheel, first one that I can actually haul stuff in, and it gets better mileage than every car I have owned except my Camry. But I can't say I haven't thought about possible issues with it like other people have had. I do have a 10-year hundred thousand mile extended warranty so that eases my mind a little.

I've come to the conclusion that no matter what vehicle I buy, I'll be stressed hearing the stories other people have regarding issues. There isn't a single car model forum that isn't full of horror stories. The way I see it, I love my maverick. If I have to replace parts like the CV axles or battery over time, it's not ideal, but what's the alternative? Just to a different model that has just as many issues and recalls. The only difference is I won't know what to look out for.

If something massive on my maverick shits the bed, I'll probably drop it. But it's looking more and more like the maverick is one of those cars where the core components tend to be pretty reliable, but other aspects of the car less so. That's how basically every other affordable car my family has owned has been. I mean, by the time our Toyota Tercel was the age of our maverick, the trim on the body side was starting to fall off, and the seats were splitting open. So it could be worse.

I understand the OP's misgivings. I owned a 20 Ranger and it was a nice truck but I didn't need the bed space and it was still bigger than I wanted so I sold it when I ordered my first Maverick. Don't remember if had any recalls but I only owned it about 8 months.

We can all justify what we buy or don't buy and I am sure the OP did the right thing for him. If I lose confidence in my Maverick it will be gone the next day and I will be driving a Ridgeline or a Santa Crus unless someone else is making a small pickup I like better. I no longer have a lot of product loyalty so the vehicle I buy has to stand on its own. I just ordered a 25 Maverick and it will be my 4th so still a happy camper.
I'd highly recommend a Nissan frontier or Ford ranger for your use case. The current gen Ridgeline has had something like 17 recalls and apparently their transmissions are made of glass. That 9 speed has a ton of problems, it's why I didn't buy a pilot. The sante Cruz also has quite a few issues, the dual clutch transmissions in particular seem to fry themselves.

The frontier and ranger are both a good combination of new designs, but proven tech.

Good to know and thanks for the heads-up. I'll have them print out the service records for me and quote an extended drivetrain warranty.
One way of judging vehicle reliability is by the cost of the extended warranty. The more reliable a vehicle is the less expensive they generally are. Cost of a repair is a huge factor as well. Extended warranties function like insurance, they are using the same math to determine their risks. Higher risk? Higher cost to the consumer.

A point that people completely overlook. It still sucks from a financial perspective, but at least you are alive to experience the suck!

Not to be a downer but the looks of those older Rangers are depressing- Would have jumped on a newer one or a Frontier -

First, I want to thank everyone who critiqued or challenged my decision, even those who added a dose of snark. It made me rethink the whole thing and see if I could do something better.

I'm not keeping the Maverick, but I'm getting a better result. Sending me back to the drawing board led me to a 2020 Ranger Lariat with 33K miles on it and all the options I could want for only $5K more than the 2019 XLT.

I should still be able to pull this off tomorrow.

My Maverick has been pretty reliable but I can't ignore all the issues people have had as they accumulate miles or the endless stream of recalls. Not to mention, how easily these trucks seem to get totalled from what should have been minor accidents. I've also had occasion to find the bed length confining lately and I miss being able to plow my own driveway. So, I'm throwing in the towel.

On Saturday, my 15K-mile 2022 Maverick XLT Lux will be traded in on a 56K-mile 2019 Ranger XLT extended cab that was ordered with all the goodies (and then some) that the Maverick has. I was able to strike a deal that required making up only a $1677 difference in the OTD bottom line. I'm happy with that.

The concept was brilliant and the design was perfect for the niche it occupied. It's too bad Ford didn't take a bit more time to give it the polish and durability it deserved.

One thing to remember about the online complaints is that MTC represents a small fraction of Maverick owners. There was a thread like a year ago that calculated if every single registered MTC member was having issues it would only be around 2% of the total Mavericks sold IIRC.

Not saying the Maverick will ultimately be as reliable as a Toyota or something (FWIW Toyota trucks have been having a small issue with their engines grenading themselves lately) but it's something to keep in mind.

OTOH if you need plowing ability or whatever then get the truck you like.

So far my 23 hybrid has been my favorite vehicle I've owned in 38 years of driving.
(Well except for maybe the 98 Camry, that thing was bulletproof and super comfortable.)

I have owned a Frontier, Colorado and the Ranger and all nice but don't want another mid size truck. 🙂

For sure, every vehicle has issues, and forums do highlight them because people with issues look for help from other owners! Every brand and model of vehicle has them, some more than others. I've seen it on forum for every model of car I've owned in the last 15 years. Nothing is perfect, and Ford's biggest problem is software and 12v battery issues, IMO.

The biggest problems with the Maverick aren't in the day to day driving of the vehicle, or the utility. The concept and usefulness of it is beyond question. For me, for example, it's all little stuff that gnaws at you in the background. Software stuff, condensation in the third brake light, 12v battery not charging properly, and worst of all it's the wait times anytime you need something repaired. Between shortages of shop techs and back-ordered parts, it can be a bit of a pain even for a simple expected wear item. I'm just thankful that I've only had two items outright fail, an under the hood fuse and the third brake light that is getting full of condensation. The former was fixed along with a recall, and latter, next time I go in it should get dealt with.

I won't sell my Maverick over the issues I have, because the utility outweighs the issues, simple as that. To me it's good to share issues, but to do so honestly and not blow them out of proportion. I see far to many people here losing their heads when someone has issues and treats them like dirt, it's rather saddening.

I'll just add in my $.02. Clearly this transaction works out well for the dealer, as he's offloading one vehicle, getting in another he can markup and resell, and he's getting some cash on the hood, too. So that should tell you something.

Second, you're trading based on fear but turning a blind eye from what you know (some mavericks -- not yours -- have had CV joint issues, and there have been a few annoying but not terribly consequential recalls) to something you don't know... a truck that's 3 years older, has 4x the miles, may have had significant issues, may have been neglected mechanically, hell, maybe had been in an accident or flooded... who knows? Why did the PO get rid of it?

I think this post, like SO many others out there on car forums, is just a case for the original poster to justify in his or her mind a transaction that they suspect isn't really the best or needed, but just something they want to do. And I'm not saying that's wrong, or that getting a Ranger is a mistake. (unless you're one of those people that serially trade in cars and get deep and deeper into debt, which is a whole other thing).

So, enjoy the Ranger and don't worry that you're letting down all of us Maverick owners who, for the most part, are enjoying thousands and thousands of flexible-use, high mpg, trouble-free miles. Cheers.

The side airbag recall is what really destroyed my faith in Ford. My local dealer destroyed the dash, multiple pillar plastic pieces, and left out two nuts that were supposed to hold these razor blades. That could have killed me and/or my passengers.

PXL_20240109_201903676.NIGHT.jpg

Ford took 2-3 months from my first call to corporate to fix this at another dealer, despite multiple pictures and screenshots from their service manual showing the issue. I will never buy another Ford.

What will you replace your Maverick with, I’m in Washington too, who was your dealer?
