Certainly don't have to tap any wires if you don't want to.
There is always the decades-old alternative of wire wrapping:

You could use a 30 guage wire (strip a single wire off of an old computer IDE cable) and wrap it around the male terminal at pin 7 in the main connector. Then reconnect the connector while guiding the wire out the side, and connect to the MyMavMode mode wire (solder).
In a pinch, a ballpoint pen can be easily converted into a wire wrap tool.
Me... I would use a wire tap, but to each their own.
