Certainly don't have to tap any wires if you don't want to.

There is always the decades-old alternative of wire wrapping:

https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/working-with-wire/how-to-use-a-wire-wrap-tool

You could use a 30 guage wire (strip a single wire off of an old computer IDE cable) and wrap it around the male terminal at pin 7 in the main connector. Then reconnect the connector while guiding the wire out the side, and connect to the MyMavMode mode wire (solder).

In a pinch, a ballpoint pen can be easily converted into a wire wrap tool.

Me... I would use a wire tap, but to each their own.

I was thinking of inserting the wire into the connector (back probing) and a wire tie to keep it secure.

I use the eco mode a lot so each time I press the start button I just quickly press the drive mode button 4 times and I am all set. You don't have to wait for the screen to change, It will.
Must say this is the most sensible solution. I mean like how much effort is it to push a button 4 times. Safe, Effective, Doesn't Void Warranty, etc. I automatically push the button to turn off the auto stop/start feature when I turn the dial to put it in gear, maybe takes a second? But whatever.

Pushing the button on your own is just as likely to avoid the warranty as hooking up a module.

Both very unlikely.

I haven't really probed the back end of the connector much, but often these Ford connectors have a waterproof gasket that is a little bit difficult to get through from behind.

If people are that worried about wiretaps, another easy solution would be just a strip back some of the wire and twist the new wire around it, cover with electrical tape.

That having been said, if you open up the trunk of your vehicle, you're likely to find wiretaps already there by the fuse box. These trucks come out of the factory with several in place.

Every thread has to have the obligatory "void the warranty" post
Seriously.

Heaven forbid they change their wheels or add mud guards... Ford will CERTAINLY refuse to change their broken radio with such egregious insults to the integrity of the vehicle.

In my lariat I can push my button three times pretty much as fast as I can but In my XLT I have to push 4 times with about a 1/3-1/2 second pause between each push! Go figure!!!

Let your fingers do the driving... And a module do the pushing for you!

I have only had my Maverick for about a month and been searching this forum about the drive modes but this thread was the only one I found.
The only thing I notice is difference with the resistance in the gas pedal. I mostly use drive mode and getting 50.1mpg. ECO mode seems to "eat" fuel on take off because it seems a bit draggy. Sport mode seems to do well at highway speed to maintain over 40mpg, consumes a good bit of fuel on take off but levels off at the the 40mpg quit quickly.

I have tried to read the manual but man its like not the best read :) Should you take your foot off the gas when changing, like a manual changing gears or is it 100% on the fly and is meant to toggle through with no issues. This may seem like a dumb question but I have never had a vehicle with a mode selection. My Flex had a Sport mode in the gear selection for "paddle" like shifting but never used it.

Also people are asking me "Are you going to put bags of sand in the bed for the winter for traction" It got me thinking. This is front wheel drive and never put weight in a front wheel drive. Why in the Mav.
How does the Mav perform in snow and ice? I have have not tried the slippery mode yet, but have not had a reason to.

That's not entirely true. Some FWD cars can benefit from weight in the trunk to help the rear tires have enough ground force to maintain traction so they don't start sliding when braking/cornering. Ideally as far forward as possible, which in the case of the Maverick against the front wall of the bed still puts it well ahead of the rear tires to distribute more evenly.

A somewhat unnecessarily spendier alternative would be to get male/female versions of the console connector and make a short breakout harness, but that seems a lot of effort for just one wire.

Can't say I've noticed any factory wire taps. Sure your dealer didn't leave some behind from an inventory management box?

Maybe it was on my Tucson, then. I just remember being surprised to see them.

While I have your ear, by my read, pin 45 on connector C302 should be the wire for auto start/stop, correct? Someone with an EB told me they tried grounding that pin, but it did nothing.

That all sounds correct according to the wiring diagrams in my copy of the service manual and @Mabcim's project, although they connect into the Gear-shift Module 'Instrument Panel Control Switch Assembly' connector.

Maybe they got the colors backwards and hooked into Gray w/ Violet stripe (Pin 7) instead of Violet w/ Gray stripe (Pin 45)? Edit: Actually, Pin 7 is the one for mode select so if they got one accidentally it should be pretty obvious.

My project connects to the block of buttons where the auto start button is.
