This dial shifter actually deterred me from Ford for a long time. Then we ended up with a Ford Edge rental earlier this year and it wasn't as bad as I thought. That then let me consider looking at Ford when I was car shopping and that's how I landed on the Maverick. If it wasn't for that rental, I still would not have been interested in Ford products.

As some of the reviews pointed out, it small and compact and allows you easy reaching access to the entire center area. At least there is still some "mechanical" type feel in a rotary dial... It could be like the new GMC gear selector which I am not 100% sold on either...

Im still not used to it. But im ok with it, because I like being able to reach over into the passenger's seat feet area without a shifter knob jamming into my ribs.

Not a fan of the dial. It's saves room in a manner of speaking, but give me a floor shifter.

I’m still getting used to it. I don’t hate it, but I’m not a huge fan of it either. I liked being able to rest my right hand on a traditional shifter in my other cars and trucks… Another note, muscle memory is gonna be a bit tricky because the rotary dial shifter doesn’t have stops before park and after drive. Memory has me counting the clicks, but …. I don’t know, I get lost trying to shift without looking… if that makes sense..
I agree. The detents are not there, only constant clicks that have no stops! If you could rotate the dial left to a stop, you know that is PARK and full right would be DRIVE without looking! It is like the radio dials that just keep turning.

I'm going to be looking for a clutch and a shifter when I finally get the Maverick. The rotary dial will be a new experience.

I've driven ONLY stick shift cars since I started driving in 1970. Still driving an ancient Ford Ranger with 5 speed manual. I'd really like see Ford adopt the far more sensible VW ID4 shifter, which is a twist stalk on the steering column - designed with a different form factor so as not to be confused with turn signals or wiper and light controls. It's intuitive and obvious, and it's out of the way.

I hereby declare war on any shifter in the console. Rotary, pushbutton (Hyundai), manual, automatic. They're all a stupid waste of precious console area space in the name of tradition.

I dont mind the dial, I just wish it was on the dash and they offered a front bench. That would be absolutely sublime. Rip out the rear seats for storage and still be able to carry 3 if needed.

I drive stick and have been in the same car for a dozen years. It's going to take some getting used to, but any time I am in an automatic I have that problem. Since I can't get a fake shifter to do something with my hand I am going to bring my grip strengthener and use that. Might as well get something out of the change

I am basically lazy. When I am ready to get out, I just turn the key off and it automatically goes into park, also when stopped and you open the driver's door it goes into park. These are two features you can only get with a dial. It took me about 3 to 4 weeks to develop the muscle memory and, on occasion, I still turn the dial the wrong way when trying to go into reverse.

I like the dial shifter but I also hate it at the same time, partially because of placement which I think could be fixed by getting rid of the side radio cubby to move the screen over a bit so the dial and drive buttons can sit up thereon the left side of the screen and the other day when I had to make a quick 3 point turn I accidentally put it in park then when I tried to quickly switch to reverse the R started flashing and I had to wait for it to figure it out for a few seconds.
It would also be nice if there was a bit more resistance or at least have it kind of lock in to each mode rather than being super smooth and easy to rotate.
