Seems to me that every light to medium duty trailer I've ever used had a 1 7/8" connection. My motorcycle trailer, the boat, the landscape/utility trailer, even the Uhaul enclosed trailer I rented to help my daughter move...

I'm not sure the "scientifically proven fact" would hold up to a peer review 🤔
All U-Haul (West of the Mississippi anyway) use 2"' for consistency.

Check your data source.

The tiniest of all trailer may have had a 1 7/8" years ago but that size has mostly been phased out.

You can (and may have) put a 1 7/8" ball into a 2" trailer without knowing it because 2" trailers are very very common.

Something like this you can buy today with a 1 7/8" sure.

Like this and above, almost always will be 2".

Because why not?
There is no advantage to using 1 7/8 and there is no disadvantage to using the much more common 2".

or so they start out.

After throwing the trailer on the freeway (biggest uhaul, biggest trailer), their field service came out.

After examining the hitch on the tongue, he told me that it was set up right, and couldn't possibly have come off unless the ball was too small.

The very, very worn ball.

Their roadside service is great.

But they need that, as their maintenance, well . . .

I assume they replaced the ball when the rig had to be towed back to Denver for service when the transmission linkage fell apart as I crested the Rockies. I couldn't downshift, and it was a white knuckle flight down the grade, having to choose moment by moment between more brake an more speed.

The warping of the disks was unmissable by the naked eye by the time we got it to a stop.

And after that, the engine would overheat when exceeding 50 mph--and that was without the trailer!

Around here it seems rule of thumb is over 2000lb GVWR expect 2" (To IDK 7000?) and under expect 1 7/8" but all checks should be doubled and made payable to me.
