When you say accelerate accordingly - you mean the engine is fighting your brake effort to keep the vehicle at a stop and the brakes are not enough to hold the vehicle in place?

lots of hybrid owners complain that the engine will rev to a high rpm to warm up even when little to no throttle input.

I have experienced that. But it does not cause any forward acceleration or lunge beyond the throttle input, it’s just loud and coarse.

Someone needs to tell the programmer NOT to rev the engine while in gear?

A traditional automatic stays in a low idle - barely enough to keep the engine from stalling. Brakes can easily hold, although it wastes a bit of gas.

So there is programming to turn off the engine after coming to a stop.
The “Start/Stop” feature can be annoying. A “Stop/Rev” feature is not only dangerous but wastes gas.

Nobody today builds a vehicle that does that on a cold startup. They all need around 2,000rpm to burn the fuel properly, and only drop down to idle when the cat converter is warmed up.
If your engine is warmed up and its doing this stop/rev thing, then you probably have a fault code showing, like a bad plug or something.

Im unaware of any new vehicle that revs and holds ice to 2,000rpm on start until warm.

I have had these problems, but not to the extend you are describing. I have had the ICE revving in situations where I'd expect it to be shutting down, I've felt the slight pushing against the brakes at stop lights, and also the lurching when you hit a bump while braking.

You clearly don’t understand hybrids. Might be worth while educating yourself on how they work.

You make a fair point. If I drove a Hybrid instead of an EB, I would understand the “quirks & features” much better. Probably take me a month or so to master the technique.

And for all I know the OP might be suffering from “Synner Syndrome. Although there have been a couple of other folks on this thread that felt the same thing & I don’t think SS is contagious.

My EB ICE does something “quirky” that I deal with. When automatically downshifting when coming to a stop, it will occasionally “engine accelerate” instead of “engine brake”. Speed goes up slightly & I need to apply brakes a bit sooner.

Hi all,

I'm trying to see whether anyone else has experienced this issue with their Hybrid Maverick. I drive a 2023 Hybrid XLT.

Last week I started my car on a cold day, with the heat dial turned to full blast, and when the car started, it immediately turned on the ICE engine, as should be expected, to warm up the coolant going to the heater core. Except, this time, when it turned on the engine revved to 100%, as if I had the gas pedal to the floor. I immediately shut off the car before doing anything else to make sure it wasn't jammed under my floor mats. It was not. I have WeatherTech type hard floor mats, and there was/always is a ton of clearance between the pedal and the floor mat itself.

Fast forward to today. I was picking up my son from school, and once we got in the car, I put it in drive (again, on a cold day) and the ICE quickly switched on after I crept forward a bit, and before I could even put my foot on the gas, the ICE went full throttle and tried to accelerate accordingly. I immediately shut off the car to stop it while still rolling. I again checked the pedal to make sure it wasn't jammed under the mats. It was not. A minute or so later I started it back up, put it in drive, and it happened again. No check engine lights came on or anything.

I've also experienced issues with the car trying to "lurch" or "lunge" past the brakes while the ICE is running when stopped at red lights. The dealership claims they couldn't replicate the issue, and said that because, again, no check engine light came on, and there were no codes, so they said they couldn't escalate the issue to Ford Motor Company.

Another potentially safety-related problematic issue I've had since the car was new is that the whole car often shakes/shudders when stopping, particularly if I have to brake hard, and sometimes when I'm stopping hard over bumps, it even disengages the brakes if I hit a bump while braking.

None of these issues throw codes, so the dealership says they can't do anything to help me.

At this point I don't think the car is safe to drive, and I'm considering calling an attorney, but because there's no replication of the issues with the dealership, I don't know what kind of recouse I have. That said, I have two kids, and I drive a lot for work, but with all these issues over the past two years, I don't feel safe driving it anymore.

Has anyone else experienced these issues?

I notice my 24 ecoboost seems to rev up when it is in Sport mode or Tow mode and I come to a stop.

So, now that you are "lawyer-ed up", are you here trying to collect evidence/examples for him? File your suit and move on....let us know the result in 2-5 years when you finally get your day in court after the lawyers file paperwork request after paperwork request to milk you and Ford for every dime possible.

A good lawyer would insist he stop driving the truck immediately. Keep track of expenses & inconveniences.

If the OP continues to drive an unsafe truck - any case will be weakened.

Maybe OP should consider Ford’s new trade-in incentive for dissatisfied Maverick customers?

Exactly....there are other options. In today's litigious society, people are so quick to hire an attorney....go trade the dang thing in and get something else, no one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to keep the vehicle.

Yep, for me it is Sport Mode - but that is my usual mode. Good to know it is not a Lobo 7spd trans quirk or a new MY 25 EB quirk. It is a normal EB quirk.

Akthough it is a bit disconcerting accelerating slightly when coasting to a stop. But I just consider it part of the “rev match” downshift logic

It doesn't hold until engine/coolant is warm - just a short time until the cat is warmed up.

It is noticeable compared to older vehicles that sat around 950 rpms. At least I notice it, along with some other people.

Even that I don’t see vehicles ever going up to 2,000rpm.

1200-1500rpm yes but hardly 2000rpm

The whole point of my post was trying to see if anyone else had similar issues (and subsequent resolution) so I can bring it up as an idea for the dealership to investigate, if they hadn't tried it already. I don't want a new vehicle. I don't want a settlement. I just want to know that my car isn't going to keep doing this so I can drive myself and my family around without worrying about their safety, or my engine damaging itself by redlining on its own.
