I’ll start by saying I drive a lot. Got the truck in June 2023 and have 109,000 miles. 100 mile round trip commute adds up quick!
The Maverick has been great, until this week. Driving into work and heard a loud squeak sound. Almost like a slipping belt, but I know the truck has no belts. Chalked it up to something in the road and continued to work with no issues. After leaving work it did it again. Within a mile it had done it a few more times so I stopped to make sure there was nothing obvious. Another mile later the engine light came on. I pull into auto zone and get a code scanner, nothing! Back on the road and it happens again, this time it flashes a yellow warning across the screen and then a red warning saying to stop operation. At this point it throws the P1061 code. Now I have a long wait for the tow truck so I start googling. Looks like it is likely a rod bearing, which would explain the loud squeak sound. During the initial check-in the service guy said my truck doesn’t fall into the manufacturing dates for the faulty rod issue. It will be a few days before they can look at it, what are the odds Ford denies the free replacement? Anyone fell into this situation?

Yikes.

Have your maintenance records at the ready!

Have an extended warranty?

I'm surprised the updated module software didn't catch the approaching situation and warn about it ahead of time.

Or have you had the recalls / updates so far?

Rod bearings squeak? If they lose lubrication, the engine locking up won't be squeaking. If a main seizes, the rods bend and usually hole the block. Was it dumping oil and antifreeze? I hope you have been following regular oil changes. I had a job commute like that and had to have service often - almost once a month. Please let us know (hybrid owner here!).

I think the software update did what it was designed to do. The rod did not exit the block and the truck shut down. I think the squeak was the bearing starting to lock. Had a wheel bearing go bad (different vehicle) and it made a similar noise. No oil or fluid loss. I follow oil changes religiously, always synthetic. Stopping at the dealer on Tuesday if I don’t hear anything before then.

Got word back from the dealer:
Recommended service
$399.90
Other | trans diag/info: verified concern, performed eec test retrieved multiple codes in pcm and sobdmc for internal clutch A fault issues and Generator Torque Delivered Performance and Transmission Range Sensor Alignment, also retrieved code p1061 Excessive Engine Component Deterioration, they have a tsb for this one to reprogram 4 diff modules,....

So they are saying the P1061 is in error and only requires reprogramming. But……

$7,716.20
Other | need complete transmission assembly

failed transmission that requires complete replacement. Seems super expensive. Will probably have a second opinion before dropping 8k.

Ended up having the truck brought to my house. Dealer continuously ignored my request for the codes that pointed to the transmission. Also said that if the problem still existed after replacing the transmission that I would be liable for the cost regardless.
Since then I’ve pulled oil samples from the transmission and engine and sent them to Blackstone for testing. Oil looked clean, transmission did have some flakes, but nothing that I would consider excessive.
I received OBDLink cable yesterday and got Forscan set up. Started to watch tutorials on the program. Will post details of the trouble codes soon.

Did you have the transmission fluid serviced in the 109K miles? I intend on replacing the fluid after 40K.

Assume you had to pay the dealer for a "diagnostic" and they wouldn't give you the fault codes. Frustrating, for sure.

I've only done two fluid changes on these types of transmissions, early one on the Maverick, and overdue one on a Toyota. Neither one had flakes of any kind.

Good luck on this!

Cheers.

I do not. Ford calls for 150,000 mile service. This was so easy to drain and fill that I wish I had done it sooner. I’ll share the test results. Should have a good write up on the oil health.

oh yea, diagnostic fee was $500. Not encouraged that you saw no flakes.

I thought P1061 was *always* the rod bearing failure thing?

Apparently not. What the dealer said is it Ford’s guidance is to reset the P 1061 code and retest. since I’ve gotten the truck back, I have reset the codes, there were a lot of them. I think many were due to the dealership moving the truck around or doing testing.

After the reset, I am down to five codes.

P0811 excessive clutch slippage.
That code is set when the engine speed and the transmission input speed do not match. Lends some credence to a transmission problem or the damper failure.

P0E71 - generator torque delivered performance. This is a code that is set if the vehicle sees a problem in the drivetrain and it has disabled the generator inverter to prevent further damage.

P1920 engine speed signal signal compare failure. Very similar to P0811 where it is seeing excessive clutch slippage.

P2806 transmission range sensor alignment mechanical link failure. This one’s interesting. I’m going to check the range sensor by disconnecting from the mechanical linkage and move it manually to see if there is binding or some sort of issued there.

U0401 invalid data to received from the ECM/PCM. This could be a function of the slipping clutch, not a lot of good information online about this code.

i’m not going have much time to mess with the truck over the next two weeks. The plan at this point is to wait for the oil sample analysis to come back, check all the wiring going to the transmission, and check the range selector to see that it’s able to shift between park and neutral.

At this point, I think the most likely outcome is a failed dampers or a bad bearing in the transmission. Either way it looks like I’ll be pulling the transmission out of this truck in the driveway.

Blackstone reports were very clear.
The engine oil was perfect. Transmission had 1089 ppm iron vs an expected average of 53. Nickel and Boron were slightly high as well. The additive package of the oil still looked good so this failure is not due to old/bad lubricant.
Started the process of removing the transmission today. Hope to have it out before the weekend is up.
