The OEM are easily damaged by idiots carelessly using impact guns to remove and replace them. Cheap sockets make it even worse. I have original 2 piece sets that lasted 11 years with proper use (and I live in southern Ontario with lots of snow and salt). I have also successfully used solid one piece on my 2008 Ranger(it was fifteen years old when I sold it), but even the solid ones can be damaged with cheap sockets and careless service.

It has nothing to do with being in the cold. I live in Florida and had it happen to my ex wife's Focus in about 5 years. The 19 mm socket still fit, but it was getting snug when the car got destroyed.

The # 64074 "Bulge" style most closely replicates the OEM lugnut, although it is a bit longer. And has a 22mm hex, so you'll need a new socket/lug wrench.

It was a known issue going back to my '15 Focus. While getting warranty work in '19, the tech said he could replace them for $100. I told him I'd take care of it and he came back minutes later and said how about $25. The wheels were already off so do it. Traded that for my Maverick.

Thanks, I carry a Star wrench with 13/14 and 7/8 sockets so I should be good with 22mm diameter nuts.

What about the stock Maverick lug nuts?
I haven't seen anyone on the forum mention a problem with them yet, and the "similar search list" doesn't show that either. I know on the XL with steel wheels, alloy wheels will require lug nuts designed for them.
That may be a different case for the other trims if they have alloy wheels or some other factor is involved, but with a new vehicle under warranty, keep the lug nuts you have, as the warranty won't replace parts you add on if there is a problem...

Yes, I would think OEM would be fine.

This was a big subject over on the F-150 forum as it was a common issue for those living along the ocean and in the land of winter salt on the roads season. Had swollen lug nuts myself. I have also owned three Chevy Equinox SUV's over the years and they also came with the same crappy lug nuts. The consensus over on the F-150 forum was that the McGard lug nuts had a slightly longer lasting finish on them than the Gorilla lug nuts. I will be swapping my lug nuts out for McGards when I rotate my tires the first time.

You a right about the temperature. That doesn't matter.
What does is the source of corrosion that Florida and Canada have in common.
In the Great White North, or anywhere in snow country, it's the ice melt salt, and in Florida or any costal area, it's the salt in the sea air.

I lived adjacent to a salt water canal near the beach in SoCal back when it was worth living there, and even the aluminum block on my garaged motorcycle would rust, along with everything else metallic unless it was galvanized.

I wonder if there is a difference between the XL and other trims due to the steel wheels.
The XL also has covers over the lug nuts, so that might make a difference...

XL = just one piece of metal

XLT + Lariat = a thin sheet of chrome plated covering the solid metal, making a 2 pieces lug nut

The problem is that moisture or something got in between the lug nut and the chrome cover plate for the XLT + Lariat, leading to the metal rusting and swelling, which your standard 21mm socket can't fit on.

Chrome lugs on black wheels... Not sure what Ford was thinking.
Might see if I want lugs or if there is a lug cover like my VWs had

Interesting. Can relate some here…our camper had those nuts with clam shell cover. Tire shop would take an impact wrench to them, beating those covers. Most would split. Working with tire shop instruct them to use wrench first to “break“ them, then impact them off. Likewise, impact them soft, then use torque wrench. But I discovered tbe actual nut is behind the shell. So got a MM socket to fit that actual nut if the cover fails, falls off. Always a backup, fir the long road.

Thanks for the pic. It's the first time I've seen a XL lug nut!

It appears the XL lug nuts are better than the more expensive trims and the truck was also much less expensive! Who-Ho!
No corrosion problems, and with the cover over the lug nuts, they are also weather protected.

I was considering getting alloy wheels, but I just might stay with the steelies, although they are 4 pounds heavier.... Decisions, decisions...
