I am getting ready to place an order for a 2023 Orange XLT, AWD 2.0.

I'll be doing some light to medium towing. This includes a pop up trailer (1k lbs) and Pontoon Boat (3k lbs). The boat only travels a few miles at a time to the launch, but it will need to be pulled out of that same launch. Maybe tow a utility trailer once in a while. Probably not any serious off roading, but will be used from the mountains to the shore of NC.

There seems to be a lot of similarities between the FX4 and 4k tow. Feels like the FX4 offers most of the 4k tow options plus additional features. Is it necessary to add the 4k tow on top of the FX4 package.

Side question. If you dont get the FX4 can you add on your own tow hooks? Would make tying on canoe/kayaks much easier.

Looking forward to see if I can live with downsizing. Last two were Ridgeline and 150 Supercrew.

Just get both. The 4k comes with a better value because it adds a integrated trailer brake controller along with a different gear ratio. The fx4 hooks can only be done with that package as any other version of maverick has no access or mountable locations for hooks. Since you are getting a XLT the FX4 would also give you the bigger and imo better dash display. They are both a good value for the money.

Also fx4 comes with monotube rear shocks vs the twin tube on every other model. Not sure if the site shows that now but I don't think it did for the 22s.

For what you have described it would be my humble opinion that you will need the 4K for sure.

That gives you a transmission cooler and lower gear ratios in the that tranny.

I actually ended up buying two Mavericks when the dealer failed to add my request for the 4K package initially. It doesn’t take a lot of heating to trash a transmission.

It does not. The 4K package adds so much more than the FX4 it's not even funny. Upgraded suspension, 4/7 pin trailer hitch, integrated brake controller, upgraded radiator WITH a trans cooler, upgraded drive ratio, and upgraded cooling fan.

IMO FX4 is more of an appearance package. While it does offer some functional items like the tow hooks, heavy duty cooling fan, heavy duty radiator, and skid plates most of the other items are for aesthetics. Bigger screen, rims, box decals, and different drive modes.

Those black rims though 🙃 mostly agree. The OP stated having a 3k trailer to tow… so i think either way he needs 4k package. This seems like an easy choice lol 4k for sure. If you have an extra 750 bucks laying around and like how the fx4 rims and decals look… then get both lol but yes… there is a decent amount of redundancy.

Any decent set of black off roadish wheels are going to run 200$+ a wheel. That was the easy sell for me. I'll take fx4 sticker too.

FX4 seems the better get. Similar (redundant?) upgrades under the hood. FX4 has the tow hooks, skid plate, wheels, and screen. That is more to me than the 7 pin and trailer brake. Adding a trailer brake isn't that hard, and they have wireless ones. If I was going to pick 1 it would be FX4. Now since the OP will regularly tow larger loads the 4k may be better. But I'm getting FX4 and probably not 4k.

Upgraded suspension is part of the fx4 package, monotube vs dual shock for all other trims

Where do you see this? I thought it was listed as part of the order guide at first, but then didn't end up actually being included with FX4. I'm on the fence with adding FX4, and that could help me go one way or another. Just checked the build page on Ford.com and didn't see anything about suspension in the FX4 package details.

I went through this same debate last year. Simply put you need both. Without the 4K tow package you are limited to 2,000 pounds tow capacity and the sticker on your door jam is going to say it. You’ll regularly exceed the tow rating of your truck which is going to make you liable for any mishaps and also make it impossible to rent any trailers rated at more than 2k such as car carriers, large enclosed trailers and the like.

just eat the extra $800, get the transmission cooler, upgraded final gear ratio and trailer brake controller and be done with it.

Similarities yes they both come with hitch & bigger radiator & fan, but 4K does get brake controller & 7 pin connector as well as trans cooler and gear ratio changes. The FX4 is the only way to get tow hooks (frame is different) along with skid plates, mono tube shocks, different drive modes (now can be done with forscan), “unique black” wheels and my personal favorite is the larger display screen - either way in my opinion both are much cheaper to get packages than buy aftermarket/afterwards upgrade if’s you want to tow. It’s upto you, your money maybe you should look into the ranger which is more “truck-tow” capability 4x4, as the maverick is more of an suv with open cargo AWD.
