You and the previous commenter are both precisely rightHere where I live, the first fair sized snowfall of the winter you always see Subaru’s and 4x4 trucks in the ditch. Not the vehicle, but overconfident drivers!
Very few people ACTUALLY need either.
Most folks want either, and fair enough I'll never stand in the way of freedom of choice
But, I'll also not stand here and be told what someone needs when I know when 4x4 is needed, and I now know what fwd can handle, and I can say with rather confidence that awd is truly a rather niche use unless you WANT the ability to be prepared for the ditch, which I'd rather just drive appropriately or if it is bad enough, a day off even without pay is better than a wrecked truck or not even making it home
