Here where I live, the first fair sized snowfall of the winter you always see Subaru’s and 4x4 trucks in the ditch. Not the vehicle, but overconfident drivers!
You and the previous commenter are both precisely right

Very few people ACTUALLY need either.

Most folks want either, and fair enough I'll never stand in the way of freedom of choice

But, I'll also not stand here and be told what someone needs when I know when 4x4 is needed, and I now know what fwd can handle, and I can say with rather confidence that awd is truly a rather niche use unless you WANT the ability to be prepared for the ditch, which I'd rather just drive appropriately or if it is bad enough, a day off even without pay is better than a wrecked truck or not even making it home

"Stupid is as stupid does"
Is a phrase meaning that a person's actions, rather than their appearance, are the best indicator of their intelligence; essentially, you can judge someone's "stupidity" by the foolish things they do - this quote is most famously from the movie "Forrest Gump" where the main character, Forrest Gump, says it in response to being called stupid.

Back in the day we didn't crash in snowy weather,
driving our rear wheel drive,
Drum Rear Brake,
No traction control,
Bias ply tire cars.
We Carried tire chains and a snatch rope,
Just In case. Men do this, Young'uns~
Just sayin.

Question. When airbags go off, does the price covering airbag on steering wheel hit people in face? I was looking at mine yesterday thinking. Does this sob really hit me in face at 100mph? It’s a plastic plate in my car

The only advantage of awd is that you start going faster
Stupid is as stupid does. I see people do that all the time and get into trouble.
BUT I like the added control of AWD and actually need it to climb my very steep gravel roads.

My Mav has AWD feature. I don’t care for it, nor a 4 wheel drive setup. Don’t intend to do any AWD or 4 wheeler schemes. But unfortunately when shopping for Mav, this puppy was available. So bite bullet, got it with AWD. And disappointed can’t turn it off.

As for this video of driver crashing into the truck, he obviously some kind of hurry, passing on a snowy/iced road. But his action reminds me of our local drivers who tries to take my back and front bumper off when passing, even on dry road on a clear day. And if one honks at these passers, they get angry. Some kind of hurry. Insensible hurries….get in accident, they had it coming.
It isn't full time AWD so it will only kick in when needed. You're only paying a minor MPG penalty. Consider it a traction insurance policy.

No, the cover pops out of the way and the bag hits you in the face.

I needed AWD to make the climb easier up to my cabin when the gravel roads are dry. Dry makes the gravel move like ball bearings on my steepest sections.
Several here have FWD only and are fine unless it's super dry and loose or they got something in the back of their truck or car like groceries or truck stuff. The added stability of my AWD on slick winter roads makes a world of difference. I have many days I have to leave my FWD Escape at home.
🤓 I had a 2017 Titanium Escape,(until an old lady pulled out in front of me) , it gave me a choice of FWD,4X4. The 4x4 stay on til I hit 30mph. Wish I had that choice with my Maverick..

The issue is drivers who think AWD is some sort of magic feature that gives them full control on all road conditions. The reason you see so many 4x4 and AWD vehicles in the ditch on the first snow is because drivers are (re)learning Newton's laws and the limits of their vehicles.

Overconfidence, impatience, and stupidity - AWD contributes to only one of those.

Understand, seen it on the dash display, it ID wheel control. I don’t think insurance folks really care if a vehicle has it.
