***FINAL UPDATE*** Transmission issues

This process took you less than a month from your first post. This was a faster response than many I have seen. Ford must be looking close at this issue to be jumping on it like that.
I think you need to stay wary. I also think we all need to be aware that there is a on going issue with that transmission. Don't wait until there is a failure. Once you feel something is off get that vehicle in to the dealer.

Cannot speak to other brands. I know first hand in some Ford vehicles, one in particular. 90’s Lincoln Continetal equipped with a 4.6L 4 valve engine made nice power. Transmission could not not withstand WOT shifts. The fix was as the vehicle went into a WOT shift the Fuel and Spark were pulled back until the shift was complete. At this point the Fuel and Spark were fed back in at a controlled rate.

Car would literally nose dive on WOT shifts. Ford experimented and built some High capacity Front Drive Transmission but this was never available. Cost, Size and, limited vehicles to put in.

If Ford is trying to cut cost, why not a smaller engine that's suitable for the transmission?

I'm not a car guy, I understand next to nothing about the mechanics, but on the face of it this seems bonkers to me. Why not a smaller engine so you don't run the risk of killing the transmission, and be honest about the tow rating?

edit: And I'm not trying to be pedantic or salty. Just feeling a bit confused and apprehensive, asking questions, wondering if the first year of a new model was the right thing to commit to.

with todays computers and sensors you would be amazed what they can write into the computer . yes there are sensors that can read octane and ethanol levels in fuel and adjust fuel and timing to reduce power .

Remember this is a turbocharged engine. So higher octane can support more compression via more boost. Running lower grade fuel the PCM detunes itself with less boost to prevent knocking.

I read that the engine was Dyno tested by Ford and rated at 250hp on premium fuel. 87 octane shows about 217 or so on dynos.

To the original poster of this thread: you mentioned strange shifting after you got your truck back. Call the dealership and make sure that they reset the PCM so it clears out the previous shift patterns and driving characteristics. The computers in newer vehicles learn your driving styles and can change shift patterns based on that. That has been a big thing with the 10-speed transmissions in the f-150s and even the six speeds. When I tuned my F-150 the instructions clearly stated to drive it 15 miles before really romping on it and the transmission shifting did in fact change after 15 miles.

****Final Update****

Got the truck back yesterday. They replaced the transmission with a new one. They did not mention what was wrong, but stated Ford wanted the transmission to look into. To me, the first three gears do not feel right, still. I'm hoping I'm being over sensitive to the truck. First to second is a quick snap, almost like it's in sport mode. Second to third is almost like an early gear slip, but I don't know.

The bill was for $5600 dollars, if anyone was interested.

My Mav does not shift real smoothly in the low gears when I accelerate real slowly. It is quite smooth when I accelerate a bit more rapidly and also under hard acceleration. I’m not going to worry about it.

That's exactly what mine is doing now. If I'm on side streets, it's bad. Normal acceleration is better.

Hey Ford good job stepping up to help this kid. It's great that you monitor the club. Nice to know you're taking notes. Here's one for you, ensure that when the dealers release the Maverick they remember to take the tire pressures down to 35 from 45 psi. My wife has been getting 21 MPG on her Maverick with mostly highway driving, yesterday I checked the pressures on my Ford Pass, 45 psi all of them and she's put over2,500 miles on it. So that could have caused a blow out at that level. So today she drove with the proper tire pressure and we'll do a MPG check again soon and you know that 21 MPG is, basically, unacceptable. We're Ford people and this was a present from me, I replaced her 2nd Fiesta SE and I'm driving my 3rd F-150 and our 10th new Ford product . Thank you

Are you/is she leaving the vehicle in “Normal “ mode or using the different modes, in particular “Eco” mode? In Normal I’ll get about 22 MPG, in Eco I’ll typically get 25 MPG with up to 29 MPG under ideal conditions.

I will say, it was easily the next experience I have had at a dealership. They called me frequently with updates, took care of my rental and were very quick .

It was serviced at Russ Milne Ford in Macomb, MI.

My only complaint would be they did not clean the truck. I don't mind the outside, but the tech did not put a paper mat down and drug in a bunch of funk from his boots. The interior of the truck smells like transmission fluid. I had to wipe down the door sill and the drivers mat with goo gone to remove it.

This is immediately what I thought of when he was describing his shifting characteristics. I've had this happen. I had a Volvo XC90 Ocean Race Edition that I had 3 new transmissions in. They said they couldn't do a reset on it. Each time it took about 1,000-1,500 miles for the shifting to adjust to the new transmission.

It is a fairly quick response, and amazing they had transmissions available for repairs. I agree though, be wary and monitor it for a while.
