I was reading the manual for the first time after about a year, and I noticed it states on page 183 , regarding putting the vehicle into park "the electronic parking brake could apply if you shift to park on a slope [or] if you shift to park without the brake pedal fully pressed"

Has anyone ever noticed the parking brake engage itself when put in park?

I park on a slope frequently, but usually uphill. And I usually do engage the parking brake by pulling the lever.

But this is more because I'm worried about stressing the transmission then I am about rolling away.

But it has got me thinking maybe I'm wearing out this parking brake actuator thing, when I could just let the vehicle somehow decide if it actually needs a parking brake.

But I've never actually ever noticed it engage the parking brake by itself.

Have not noticed when parking on my sloped driveway. Mine I have to push down to disengage, pull up to engage.

Good question. Infrequent meet ups with hill parking, so I haven't noticed. Will focus more on this in the future. Wife's Palisade will go into auto brake even if on a slight grade such as a driveway, but I haven't noticed the Maverick doing the same.

I couldn't tell you anything about the engaging on it's own (or driving a Maverick - still waiting since Oct '21) but I'm familiar with the electronic parking brake. My 150k mile '15 Fusion has the electronic parking brake actuators and I'm in and out of the car about 30 times a day - if my experience is anything to judge by you'll be fine using the parking brake all you care to.

Yes and been aware of its limitations. Sometimes if you allowed the parking park to engage automatically and later that day you jump in, start the motor and disengage the parking brake by hand and put the transmission in drive the brakes gets grabby sometimes so ill get into a habit of letting the parking brake disengaged automatically after I put in drive and press the foot brake to disengage .. so basically let the parking brake do it’s auto engages and disengages . If you manually pull the e brake just remember to disengage manually also or it’s gets grabby

Never seen it engage on it's own after a year and plenty of parking on hills. I will say this vehicle in P moves more than any vehicle I've ever owned. Feels like I'm going to roll away if I don't put the parking brake on.

I have had mine engage on it's own 3 times, always was on a flat surface, hasn't done it lately. I was experimenting with turning off the vehicle in the garage without shifting into park, or when the auto stop engaged when I pulled in the garage I just turned off the key to see what happened, it always goes into park on it's own, & that seemed to be when it happened, but only those few times.

That's good to know. I'm going to see if not using the brake will trigger it.

Has "wearing out this parking brake actuator thing" ever been an issue?

Years ago a mechanic told me the single best thing you can do to increase the lifespan of your vehicle is use the parking break every time you park.

Makes sense and I have done that ever since. I doubt you'll wear out your parking brake, but wear and tear on transmission is a real concern. I'd error on side of using it.

Yes mine has done it twice. When I go to a friend's house that has a very steep driveway. It's the only place I've parked that is not flat.

Did you need to initially enable this feature in the settings?

Nope. Pulled into the steep driveway. Put it in park and the park break set itself. Both times I've been there in the Maverick it's done the same thing. Only place it's happened.

That's the conventional wisdom. Which assumes the parking brake works and doesn't get stuck.

The real issue is having an electronic parking brake that is just one more thing to break.

On the flip side if the car knows when it needs the brake then that's different, in theory anyway.
